Hi all,

Do 300 TDIs require a turbo timer? ie the gizmo that allows the engine to run on for while after ignition off to prevent turbo oil starvation?

Cheers

They do not 'require' one but it is a good idea with any Turbo engine to let it idle for 30 seconds or so before turning off the engine. This allows the turbo to slow down, get lubricated and cool a bit.

No need for the electronic gizmo's just do it yourself, take your seatbelt off, gather your phone and wallet before turning engine off.

Likewise, it's a good idea to allow the engine to run for a while before driving off, again just 30 seconds or so to allow the oil to circulate.

I forgot to say, I once approached a young lad in an Impreza at a fiiling station who blipped the throttle and revved the engine quite fiercely before turning off the engine.

I merely pointed it out that it is potentially the worst thing you can do to an engine, raise the cylinder temperatures, fill the bores with fuel washing the oil away, spin the turbo up and then switch it off!!

He promptly told me where to go in no uncertain terms?

What do you excpect from someone that drives an impreza?

He will have a nice bill for the repair, Jim, so just smile and know you are right.

We have an Impreza in, a 54 plate, "a deal" says the trade buyer, "only £6300" :)

:scratchCh " What about the knackered crank?" says I :Idunno:

"You know, that hard knocking sound when you rev it....."

:o:o:o:o :scared:<------- Trade buyer. :banging::Rant:<------ The Boss

Ho hum, anybody rebuild an Impreza engine that wants to give me some pointers?

Chris

Thanks for the responses - I was hoping the tdi would be one of those that has a wee pump that keeps the oil circulating for a while

There's a place in Leicester that I got a crank for a friend, it was about £600 and it was a tiny little thing.

Something Good or Goode racing/motorsport I think they are called.

They said it is a common problem with them so they keep a good stock.

I have to admit, in my younger days we had an International 1056XL tractor, 105hp as standard. We had a TB Turbo's kit fitted that raised it to 135hp. Part of the kit was a replacement exhaust pipe. It was just a straight through pipe, sounded lovely, especially when you blipped the throttle before switching it off.

My elder and much wiser, fellow worker soon gave me a good slap and explained why it was such a bad thing to do!

No it was certainly not :p

Have discussed turbo timers a lot on scooby forum.. general concensus is if you drive sensibly for the last part of your journey, keeping off boost then this is more tahn enough to let the turbo cool down. Biggest problem is motorway driving then going for petrol in a service station.

Again advice here is to drop to about 60mph for the last mile before the sevices or just park up and let her idle for a moment before the petrol station (not on the motorway of course :o)

Didn't think you could drive them without any boost. Even flatter that a disco until the turbo starts ;)
