Just finished an engine install with new clutch and was very concerned when trying to bleed the system when the clutch pedal failed to rise up once I'd pushed it to the floor.

At the time not knowing that this is what is supposed to happen ((By searching the forums I subsequently discovered that is what is supposed to happen and you have to manually lower and lift the pedal to bleed the system).I removed the slave cylinder rod to make sure the 'rod' was locating the release bearing arm unfortunately the rod and the clip holding it to the release bearing arm came free with the slave cylinder.

Feeling inside the bell housing it appears the clutch release bearing arm is all the way to back of the bell housing.

So I wonder if anyone can shed light on my predicament.
1) Can the clip that holds the clutch slave cylinder rod be fitted back onto the arm through the slave cylinder aperture?

2) Should the release bearing arm be all the way to the back of the bell housing, or is it simply there because I pushed it there, with no resistance, when fumbling around trying to grab the arm to get the clip back on.

Phew sorry it's a little long winded. Your thoughts would be appreciated. As a newbie with Disco problems I have made good use of the forum in the past few weeks and hope at some stage to contribute something meaningful my self.

Hate to tell you this, but I'm pretty sure you need to move the box back and get inside - you'll need a new clip too.

The bearing release arm should be located behind a stud at the opposite side to where it comes out of the bell housing, get a torch you may be able to see it.

I put a new slave cylinder in the RR and got into trouble with this, it took some time and patience but i got it all back together, if i remember right there was a spring on the RR peddle that returned it, don't know if this was standard, but had no problems bleeding it.

Will see if i can locate a diagram or pic of the set up and post it.

Just found this (http://www.landroverclub.net/Club/HTML/Disco_clutch_damper.htm) doing a quick search on the net interesting site. :)
Will see if i can find a pic of the release bearing arm.

I thing the setup on the RR is different.

Just having a quick search it would seem that you do have to lift the peddle on the Disco, the only toppic i could find on slave cylinder replacement said leave the rod in place.

On a 300TDi Disco the clutch pedal goes over the spring pivot when you are bleeding the system. You have to pull the pedal back with your hand until there is no air in the system. Once bled the pedal will not travel far enough for this to happen.

on my disco 300i i pushed the clutch pedal to the floor and it never returned, turns out it was the clutch arm slit or sumit, got told by garage there really weak. cost 300 squid to fix it!!!:(

Thanks for all the replies guys..much appreciated. I think I'm resigned to moving the box back but a couple of hours trying to work through the slave cylinder hole won't go amiss. I think I was more concerned with whether the arm going all the way to the back of the bell housing was normal and if I spent some hours getting the clip back on it would all be in vain anyway.
Still I'll give it a go and see how we get on.
Cheers
Dave

Graham - thanks for looking, yes I think the rod should have stayed in place but I thought it was just stuck and gave it a gentle tug which brought it and the clip out of the bell housing. Doh
