Hello, I'm new to the forum, just joined today and already I have a question, what does the EGR valve on the 300TDi engine actually do, I know it recirculates some of the exhaust gasses but what does it do regarding engine performance, would the engine run ok with out one.
Thanks.
Rob
PS: sorry if this topic has been covered before, I did do a search but came up with nothing. ;)

Welcome RatMan I'm a newbie myself but understand that a lot of discovery owners (and defenders I believe) have blanked off the EGR becasue its more trouble than its worth, see small info here (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Landrover-Discovery-TDI-EGR-Blanking-Plate-Full-Kit_W0QQitemZ140175136170QQihZ004QQcategoryZ31348Q QcmdZViewItem).
I also searched this forum and the LR4x4 forum but like you found nothing. Anyway I have no doubt you'll get a detailed reply from a more knowledgeable forum member soon

I have experience on Mazda Rotary's and removing the EGR valve and replacing it with a proper block-off plate yeilded no problems. However, removing one component of the emmissions controm system, means you have to remove the rest, or at least patch it in such a way that nothing else will hinder engine operation.
Im not sure how that works on a diesel, but rotarys are very finnicky. On a Rotary, remove one, remove them all.
On the diesel, you could probably get away with just that one valve.

blanking off valve will improve performance and cut down on black smoke you can buy kits all over thr place you can also take off catt not needed on 300tdi in uk this will also improve performance.

Hi I had an EGR Bypass Full kit fitted yesterday on my 02 TD5 sure does make it alot better.
This is the kit I had fitted by TD5 Alive: http://www.td5alive.com/egr.php
Its well worth it.

I am am on my 4th disco and have removed the egr from every one of them.
The principle is to reburn some of the exhaust gas to reduce nox emissions also to lower conmbustion temps, not sure how putting hot gas into the engine lowers the temps but there you go!
On the TDI i just fitted the blanking plate from the main dealer for a couple of quid, the TD5 i fitted the egr removal kit from e-bay for £35 from bell autos same kit as fom tdalive.
On the tdi the egr gas,s eat away at the rubber pipe just before the inlet manifold causing it to fail.

Am I right that the EGR valve only opens at certain times?
I have the EDC 300tdi, could I not just uplug the gizmo it on the passenger wing to stop it ever opening?

Hi, there is an article in october issue of LRO and they discuss egrs and their functions and they say that removal will not affect performance and they dont recommend removal. I am not saying they are right but its their opinion, which I respect, but I have heard so many views, and some say performance is better some say there is no difference, so I personally am still confused and so have left my egr on the Td5 alone.:)

Thats because lro are poofs:D
EGR is only meant to open during light throttle conditions and on the overun etc, but when it goes wrong the valve sticks open and lets ex gas into the inlet manifold causing black smoke and lack of power.
