Was a petrol before but had a few diesels but nothing like a LR.
Maybe just me only had it a few weeks but engine sounds different between
idle-2 & 2 onwards.
Maybe I should listen or drive another one

by 2 i presume that you mean 2000rpm? Turbo comes in about 1700. That makes a difference!:D I'm sure that if anyone on the forum lives near you, they will give you a run in theirs, and listen to yours, (sounds pervy:eek::D )although it is not always the same from the passenger seat. where about are you?

When you say it sounds different either side of 2000rpm, which is noisier? And is that under load or just blipping the throttle.
My understanding is that tappet noise is heard most at idle and doesn't increase with with load. I suspected something similar recently, had a ticking noise that got louder and louder. I really started to worry when it became a 'knock' under load, only to find out it was the exhaust manifold gasket blowing. Dry head gasket failiures on TDi's can give similar noises / symptoms, don't know if TD5 suffers from the same.

Seems louder under more load between 60-70 mph and the ticking tappity noise gets faster its really hard to explain.

Get a torch and look under the turbo heatshield look at the exhaust manifold nuts these have a habit of coming loose or dropping off!
10 in total, number 1 and 5 cyls are the most common.
Engine has hydraulic tappets.

Do you mean just check the exhaust manifold nuts not sure what you mean about
number 1 and 5 cyls are the most common.

Check they are present and correct and that they are tight! also any signs of black soot signs of the ex gasket blowing.
What happens is the manifold starts to warp (pic 2) and starts to pull the studs out of the head and by looking under the heatsheild ( pic 1 )with a torch you can see if all the nuts are there and look for the signs of soot.

Just from memory i read somehwere some time back about TD5 chewing its camshaft up.
Also easy to check remove engine cover 3 bolts then the rocker cover, lots of small bolts and look at the camshaft.
Rocker gasket is rubber and can be used again.

mines abit ticky aswell, pers when idling but going up thru the gears and just on the last bit of exceleration before changing gear it ticks, mind you its a super fast tick, seems like theres no oil in the engine at times, i think its a td5 noise cus ma mates td5 sounds just the same, or maybe just no oil in the engine!!!!-:D

Mine sounds pretty much the same a fast tickey noise which gets faster with more speed.
Had manifold checked and all is OK but will take rocker cover off and have a look.
Thanks
