bonkers rev counter

:eek: My 3.9 V8's rev counter has developed a mind of its own! Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Where does it get its signal from? What is there to check?

I believe the signal comes from a thin "Brown ??" wire on the back of the Alternator. it certainly does on the TDi
