Disapearing icons

Help please, I switched on my daughters computer this morning and everything was fine. I updated Norton Antivirus and all the desk top icons dissapeared. When I click on say excel tp copy and paste a new icon it tells me the file is already there. How do I restore the icons?

Unfortunately my wife has now played with this and restored them and is now walking around like a cheshire cat. Lets see how many hours I have to put up with this!!!!!!!!!!!
