Evening all, if any of you remember, I recently had a problem with the engine mounts in my '05 TD4 (15,000 miles) they were changed/replaced under warranty, well---------------- it would appear I have a clunking/grating noise from the rear now, called in at my local dealer and asked if they thought it could indicate broken or faulty mounts on the rear, they told me it was probably the case!!!! it is now booked in on Monday to ket them have a look, anyone got any idea's? the noise is not constant and generally shows when I either go roung a corner or hit a bump in the road, at any speed, back end seems quite heavy and not a lot of "bounce" if you know what I mean, any help or suggestions would be much appreciated
Cheers for now.:(

Well here goes, took freebie to dealer today, explained symptoms, they test drove it, checked mounts, diff etc etc , reported that all was well!!! coudn't hear anything! checked my brakes, rear drums-fine, front pads apparantly virtually down to metal/metal, serviced 3 months ago, told I had many thousands of miles left--barely touched, OK'd dealer to change pads, they now think this was causing noise in rear!!!!! must admit never heard of that one, took passengers in motor the other day and they ALL heard the noises, left freebie at dealer for further investigation but already £125 down.
This is really a bag of frogs---but I love it to bits!!!
any thoughts anyone?

OK!!!! take 3,
call from Dealer, they think they have identified the problem---------drum roll----------------it is------------the hydraulic arm on the rear door!!!!!
it would appear it seizes up!!! and caused the rattle/creak etc, -----also one or both front wheel bearings have failed!!!!!!!!!!! SORRY, but how can a vehicle with only 17000 miles on it, and has NEVER been abused in any way have so many problems? it is out of warranty in march 2008, what then! I do love my freebie but I am fast coming to the conclusion it is a LEMON. but what to do, trade it, change brands, stick with it (I know no motoring is for free or guarranteed hassle free) but how such a new car with so few miles that is serviced, kept clean, reg checked, oil & filter every 5000 miles etc etc etc can present so many probs, I need some good advice and quick, what to do????
ps any ideas what its worth? 2005 TD4 HSE usual goodies plus loads of extra's.
cheers for now:confused:

wow Maffy really sorry to hear that, i wouldn't be impressed with that either.... Havent had any problems like that with mine touch wood, although as you have said, any car will cost money....
I reckon your looking at about 11/12 grand for re sale.... Are ya sure ya wanna sell her tho ? Maybe once you have sorted the problems she will run fine and hopefully wont cost you much more.....
What ever your choice, wish ya well....Be sad to see ya sell her tho, but if she's a 'Lemon' lol ya gotta huh

Had similar problems with a works car, took it in twice to complain about nocking sound on acceleration.. they tried this and that but said there was nowt wrong and suggested i take one of their mechanics out to see if he could hear it when i did.

Took him out (MG ZS Diesel) and drove as I usually drove it... the mechanic went a funny colour, but at leats he heard the noise.. apparantly I was being a bit abusive and the engine mount bush had failed...

It went a further twice while i was in posession of it... Well it was a fleet car, and hade been jumped over speed bumps, driven over a large round about (avoiding a crash) and screwed from day one :D

Hi Maffy

Sorry to hear you are still having problems with your freebie.

You will remember my posting plus several other follow ups on the same subject of the captive nut problem on the offside rear.
Chris, has already answered on the same vane.

Incidently my TD4 auto has behaved perfectly since the repair, hence no knocking,no clunks,no sounding as if as if there is a gremlin attacking the rear underneath with a hammer & tin opener.

I presume you bought the vehicle from your local main dealer or at least the warranty was transferred and they have done the warranty work up until now. You will be tied into a main dealer for any renedial work until such times as the warranty expires and any third party work would invalidate the warranty.

As the warranty still stands then I suggest that the service manager goes out with you to hear the clunk.
Dont let them fob you off by saying leave it with us and they will look at it.
Even suggest Yourself and the service manager take any other late model freelander out with you from their forecourt.

Dear All, Many thanks for your replies and advice, Got the freebie back tonight, all fixed???? I dont think so, still have a clunking noise from the rear! I dont think I have the heart to go back again, I know I should, but I just feel I am banging my head against a wall, fobbed off, lied to, told all is well, I've just about had enough, as I said, what worries me is next march when the warranty expires--what then, there is no way I am going to pay £500 + to get an extended warranty, I think it may be time to trade in, but for what I don't know. trouble is Freebie looks and generally feels best car I have had (problems excepted)
someone please point me in the right direction.
cheers for now:(

Hi Maffy

As I know the Chester area is served by James Edwards you are fully entitled to book the vehicle in elswhere such as Guy Salmon in Knutsford or even Rybrook main dealer at Llandudno junction.

Another Idea is go along to an independent LR garage soley for there opinion.
That would then give you armed with knowledge what lies beneath.

You wouldnt have to name names, but at least its another opinion.

I got two opinions from non main dealer LR specialist before I proceeded with the work myself.

As Kevin says, you must take someone from the garage out with you to identify what noise you mean.

We get sick and tired of our receptionist booking vehicles in and it just says "got a noise" on the job sheet. Time and time again we tell the stupid bint to get the customer to wait and call over to the workshop for one of us to ride with them and listen.

Thankyou all for your help and advice, much appreciated, will try as suggested going to another dealer for their opinion, by the way, when its cold should the fuel pump TICK very loudly? is this normal or is this something else?
cheers for now.

Hi Maffy

I cant say ive ever heard the fuel pump on mine, iknow where it is but ive never heard it ticking.

Good luck with getting other opinions.

I have found some of the mechanics from non main dealer land rover specialist to really know there stuff.

LRC congleton, DSE Land rover Bollington nr macclesfield amongst some of the others really know there stuff.

The fuel burning heater fuel pump which is located in the RH rear wheel arch area near the main fuel pump and filter on a 2005 TD4 makes a loud TICK (almost a thump) every few seconds when the ambient temperature is below 10 deg. Only noticable when stationary though.

I have a similar problem to the one you describe,it only started when the garage changed the rear nearside wheel bearing. The noise is very intermittent, some days not heard at all. It seems to be most evident when I pull away from parking, particularly in reverse. At the moment the garage have checked every possibility they can think of but no joy, they seem at a loss as to where to go next and shrug their shoulders at my suggestion that it is somehow linked to the change of the wheel bearing. Will keep you posted of any news.
