View Full Version : Norton I S 2008

I have happily run NIS 2002, and decided to upgrade to NIS 2008 (3 computer version from Amazon, £20 odd.)
I had all sorts of memory use problems, i am not over endowed with memory, slowed things down horrid.
Google came up with the possibility of a bad installation, and to run the Norton removal tool, so I uninstalled, ran the tool, and it then offered me to download the latest version, and instal that.
Whether the removal tool did the trick (told me it was removing all sorts of stuff, registry entries etc), or whether the updated version has fixed some glitches in the CD version, I don't know, but if anyone else is having any trouble, try what I did.
And, p l e a s e, all you AVG etc guys and gals, spare me the comments:o:o

I had this same problem on my brother`s PC ... PITA that Norton won`t simply let you upgrade & I eventually had to use the removal tool you mention BJ ;)
ps ... Don`t get this problem with :dazzle: :dazzle: AVG :dazzle: :dazzle: .................. :p

I knew I'd get flack, obviously some got through despite my polite request;);)
And I thought you were a friend:D:D
Puts on elephant face: I have a long memory...:):):)
I did have reasons for going for Norton.
In fact it has picked up a tracking cookie that Spybot immunixation missed.

I can never understand why people pay money for Norton when the far superior AVG is available for naff all:D
I am currently trying to convince my Dad to save his money and stick AVG on his new PC. PC World tried to sell him Norton but I spoilt the sale's girls afternoon saying AVG is better and free (PC World wanted 50 quid for Norton:()

I'd always suspected AVG users couldn't read, NIS must be too complicated for them:D:D:D:D
Sorry sorry sorry, couldn't resist that. I'm suffering badly:(, went to a meeting (only 3 people) and he who took the minutes wrote a very biased innaccurate version, pushing his own views, :eek:so I have been having an email battle.
Came on here for a bit of sanity, and look what i get;);):):):D:D

Hi BigJim, this is NOT a plug for AVG, but.........................
I recently bought a new computer with a 90 day trial of Norton 360 on it.
I don't like Norton because I find it invades your computer and slows it down, so, after the 90 days I took it off my machine and replaced it with something else, and my machine runs loads faster.
Just a thought...........................

OK, thanks for that.
In fact having re installed, most of the time the computer runs just fine. It can be slow just after startup, with ccScvHst taking up lots of memory and cpu time, but once its done its thing it is OK. In fact there are 6 versions of svchost in there, all taking up memory, but all linked to different programs (not norton). I tried reducing them by uninstalling programs I hadn't used for ages (within minutes needed one of them !) and still need to do more. I am still working on it, if i find a solution I will post it. Many programs put things in memory to do things at infrequent intervals, in the good old days I would have written a startup batch file to do them and then clear the lot, but aren't clever enough to do that in windows.

Hi BigJim, if speed is your issue, I found using utillities like AdAware, CCleaner in particular ( http://www.ccleaner.com/update/?v=2.03.532&l=1033), kept my startup really tight so the machine runs quickly.
Just a thought, 'cos it sounds like you know a lot more than me OK.

Thanks, biglad, I'm not sure what I know these days, so you may be wrong!
I have always been frightened of 'speed up your computer' programs in case they hijack my computer etc, but as you recommend CCleaner I will give it a try.

I've run it, saved 191 MB, even though I had recently deleted TIFs and cookies, it deleted loads of other temp files.
registry cleaner fixed 218 items.
I think it is running faster!
thanks

Laugh, when I booted up this morning, Norton took forever to load. I was beginning to think that CCleaner (originally called crap cleaner) had recognised it as crap and cleaned it out!!:D:D
Eventually it came up on the toolbar though!

I am getting ex-ar5e-pirated with Norton..
too many programs seizing up when copying from web to word etc.
no 'I told you so' posts please
so if i go free AVG, do i use Windows firewall, antiphising , and what else?
What about anti - spyware? I already have spybot and spywareblaster.

Zone alarm for your firewall
AVG for your virus
Ad-Aware and spybot for popups
All free and keep my computers squeky clean
Does what it says on the box
Cannot see why anybody buys Norton
Even took the 90 day tryouts on hers and my new laptops off

Got to agree with everyone else, Norton is worst than many a virus:eek: and often harder to remove completely...

A few years ago i worked at a place that a had it's own dedicated Microsoft team on site on a joint project.
This was when WIN2000 was out.
The guys there help me out when i had problems with Norton then. They hated it and told me to steer clear of it.
I think it's ok for really savvy computer bods who can go into the registry and get out alive. For us mear mortals i would leave well alone and stick with the freebies.

i think a lot of my problems are low memory, and that Norton might be OK for a mega memory super fast computer.
there seems to be a 'never get there, the top is just over the next rise' philosophy, bigger computers lead to more features (most of which I seldom use), so then we 'need' bigger computers.
When I think back to what I was doing with the computers I had at work in the 1980s, I am sure I was better off. Maybe i couldn't run many programs at the same time, maybe all my backups and updates were manual, but the computer was doing just waht I wanted it to do when I wanted it to do it, and fast!

Well, I have taken your advice!
I downlaoded AVG, disconnected from the internet, ran the Norton removal tool, ran CCleaner, ran the avg exe file to instal AVG, updated it.
I then copied a huge chunk of a thread with pictures/avatars and all, and pasted into my wordprocessor..
no problems, no hang ups, runs faster..
thanks, guys.

Don't trust the Norton uninstaller !! Try opening CCleaner and under the tools section there is an unistall program which lists everything IT can find on your machine, If it finds anything , run the uninstall.
Then do a search for any files or folders with Norton in their title, that should it.

Try right clicking at the bottom of your main desktop again, like I said here (http://forum.landrovernet.com/showpost.php?p=974115&postcount=32) to try & get your Taskbar back then you can get to System Restore as normal.

Ladies and Gentlemen, you see here the reason why those working in IT do not recommend Norton.
Good luck BigJim, at least you have the recovery cd's!
Two programs I use:
Antivirus (http://www.bitdefender.com/2008/futurenow/uk/product_av.html)
Backup (http://affiliate.acronis.com/promo/ATI/true-image-024.html)

I'm getting things working, can send email but can't recive, (can do it all through netmail tho), I have the instructions printed out somewhere (with my aliases and their passwords, so don't send anything to Big.Jim, @... for a while). Pipex used to have the instructions on their website, but I guess since they joined up with Tiscali they have taken them off so we have to spend money on their help line:o:o
I'd better go to the door , some poor B was knocking, its blowing a gale and raining...
