Transmission warning lights.
While accelerating to join a motorway my transmission warning lights came on (both the “M” Manual and “S” Sport lights flashing, also flashing on the gear changer and the dash where it says D). The Manual said this indicated an electrical fault with the transmission, and I should seek professional advice (I often get told this) if it did not clear after restarting the car. Fortunately the fault cleared after I restarted.

Has anyone had any experience with this, any clue as to what could cause this, and if I should do anything preventative to avoid it again. I hope it is not a sign of problems to come.

Had same on 2001 td5 auto. Happened a couple of times. Gearbox seems to go to limp home mode.
Each time had to stop- wait- restart. 3/4 times
Have not seen problem again in the last 2k miles

This problem can also occur if you are having battery problems.

Until recently I was running a pair of Optima Yellow tops. Ran them for about three years then they gave up the ghost. First sign was the appearance of the flashing M & S lights. Checked for fault codes using electronic gismo but nothing showing.

Replaced batteries and it has been fine ever since.

Same problem, took Disco to Mackie of Glasgow Automatic transmission specialist who could not find a problem, however all lights were reset when I picked up vehicle. Previous to M & S lights showing I had three lights showing ABS,TC & HDC.They did ask if the vehicle had been jump started a few times which I thought odd but they said that sometimes a flat or disconnected battery can reset lights? So dont be like me and take the warning light as gospel I read the book and it said Do not Drive the Vehicle and it cost £117.50p for labour had i known the above I would have tried this first.By the way I checked the battery and it is not the one recommended for Discoveries so this could be my problem as the vehicle is not used often and the discharge may be enough to cause light problem.

Thanks for the LARGE font help Jimurphy

Just had this looked at, and seems to have been two different but bogus fault codes. Not much more that can be done as they were unable to replicate but said it was likely to be a power problem as in dying battery. I think Ill look at the battery but it seems fine for everything else and is used often .... Both times this happened was at night so had lights on and was accelerating.

Just posting an update ..
This is still happening for me and I have now lost count how many times.
It has been back to the shop a second time to be looked at and still no luck.
I seem to get this occurring when I accelerate (with high revs) while the headlights are on but thankfully not every time I accelerate, and that could just be coincidence ... :(

I may look into replacing the battery as this seems a fairly simple fix if it works. Will keep you posted .. thanks again for all the help ..

I finished up taking my Discovery to Taggart Land Rover who fitted some sort of electric box on top of gerabox it cost £280.00p but it solved the problem, by the way this was after they cancelled the diagnostic fee of £80.00p

Got the same problem 2003 Disco 2 automatic 2.5 HSE- with original battery...wondering should I change this, BUT it always starts first turn of the key even in recent very cold mornings so I was reluctant to throw out battery..Could battery be on its way out even though it starts fine? Manual and Sport light come on together when initially started and reversed. Turn off engine and restart and it goes away. When both lights (M&S) are lit, the gear box seems to be in crawl mode, so you can't continue - must stop turn off and restart. If it's not the battery, can anyone advise where the various earth straps are? - I read from this thread and others that faulty earths are also culprits. Thanks for help!

Had the same happen to me on Sunday, Disco has been in the workshop all day yesterday & they still can't find the fault.... mmmm May give them a call & suggest the battery option. Can just see the ££££ notes jumping out of my wallet.

I have experienced this problem intermittently since aquiring the vehicle three years ago. I can almost guarantee replicating it if I select a gear too rapidly after starting.

The fact that the user instruction manual lists the problem suggests that it is a basic electronic processor problem that Landrover have been unable to fix.

The Fault is generated by the "WXYZ" switch on the Gearbox.

The cause is normally one of three things .. in order you should check.

1. Battery condition (or at least Voltage across the ECU and switch when running .. it need to be 12V or it triggers this).

2. Air Conditioning vent apparently drips on the switch causing it to fault.
move it elsewhere .

3. Switch itself is faulty.
