Hi new here i've a 200 tdi disco and the front bearing on the transfer box is very loose. The shaft wobbles about and the drive whines like mad, oil leaks as well, done about 180K
Been to the garage but they are very busy although they have had a look, before I go back after chistmo is it right I need a new box. Can the bearing just be replaced ? Does the whole box need to come out.
Its not a bad disco some months MOT left but the repair cost outweighs the value is it worth doing? The rest seems to be ok, the garage says for its age little rust and should last a few more years (http://forums.mud-club.com/viewtopic.php?t=53322&highlight=#top)

We just did the bearings and seals when we rebuilt mine. The gears and shafts were fine.

Thanks that was quick, do you need to take the whole box out ?. I've been on a few other forums and a bit confused, some say you can take the rear one out quite easly and i've had a look underneath and can see thats possible.
But the front one ?, now a fella don't know very well says I can borrow his pit but does'nt want the disco stuck on top for a long time. Moving it about is not easy due to other vechicles under going repair. Been winter they are not to happy working outside. If I DIY this its a lot cheaper

Although I'm no mechanic, I believe that the box needs to come out, as the front bearing sits against a shoulder in the front casing, and needs pressing out, which means the front casing has to come off.
Theres a good thread on lr4x4 (http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php), I think by Les Henson, that describes how to do it.
Other threads suggest that the play in the front shaft can be 5mm or so without being a problem.
Ashcroft do an exchange box, about £450 plus vat
Whining - if its an early disco, the transfer box may have straight cut gears in, which increases the whine over later boxes with helical cut gears. All this info is second hand, and gleaned from other people with much more knowledge than me :)

I took the engine, gearbox and transfer box out and rebuilt all three, so I'm not sure if the trf box can be done "in situ".

My thread is the replacement of the rear output seal and bearing. I haven't yet done a front, but from what I've read from others, it's pretty straight forward and a couple of hours work.
Drain transfer case, prop off, flange off, oil seal out, circlip out, replace flange nut and lever the shaft out of the transfer box, remove roller bearing and replace it, then reassemble with new oil seal.

Thanks I have found I think your excellent thread with pictures on another forum LR4x4 which decribes the rear. On the front I have found an USA forum which says the front can be done in situ, the only concern is the large circle clip, that will need a special tool ? And hoping the bearing comes out side hammer ?. Either way I will have a go, nothing lost even if the box need to come out in the end. lots of infro if prepared to look
