Hi,
i took the plunge and bought an 02 series II from a dealer, 33k miles full history, manual in the xs trim for £11k and i pick it up on Friday. I have owned a freebie for 2 years and loved it, it was fab off road which it went quite often.
Does the above sound like a good deal?, it comes with 12 months l/r warranty and all the bells etc.
There were 3 people at the time queing up to buy it while we were there so we bought it after a test drive, and i must say i was surprised, it wafted along lovely, and was much smoother than my td4.
Questions:

Is there any difference in reliability between this model and the facelift?

Am i mad buying a disco after reading all the nightmare storys, or is it just a case of people who have problems come on these forums for advice.
I would love to here from someone who loves there disco II and hasnt remortgaged to fix it.
Cheers Guys.

Hi, I bought a Discovery 2 in june this year its an es with all the gadgets and leather. I bought it with a years warranty and I have returned it several times to the dealer for water ingress and new starter motor. That said I love the vehicle, its a great drive, decent fuel economy and am very pleased with it. I dont think that there are any major differences between the facelift model although someone may know otherwise. I have had a Discovery for 8years and think that although not without their problems they are great vehicles, but the warranty is worth having.:)

See my mournful post - about losing my 02 more basic Discovery. It was a great car over past two years and never let me down. Then a woman drove out garage entrance into it and spun me off road. It's a write-off. I would have jumped at your chance. Good for you, and happy motoring (I'm determined to get another once insurance comes through)

Check the levels once a week and when something needs fixing fix it:)

Most people soldier on until their car dies then they slag it off.

Had my D2 for 3 years and have owned discos for about 9 years.

I think 02 was the year for engine change to the later TD5 lump but they are all the sameish!

DOC site good, section there dedicated to TD5.

Thanks for the replys, i picked her up yesterday and wow, what a motor.
Drives superb, although you seem to take your life in your own hands when pulling out at junctions!
The only dislike so far is i nearly choked when i filled her up, bank loan required. Im now looking into how to convert it to run on air.....
All in all im very happy with it, and hopefullly will still be in 3 years time,
and im looking forward to our trip to Anglesey at easter where it will be going through sand dunes etc to see how it compares to my Freelander, no competition i expect.:)

That'll be the 21 gallon tank.Don't worry, you should see 30 mpg,we just use the top half of the tank, then it doesn't hurt so much at the pump.

Filling up - I once drained a petrol station in Scottish Highlands by driving in on empty with an Austin Champ jeep and telling guy to fill it up. He got to 35 gallons then said he had no fuel left and how much did the thing take. Mind you that was a long time ago, and petrol was 3s 6d a gallon!

Hey, congratulations on your new Landi :D

Sorry for jumping in a little bit late after your wonderous event but I have a 2003 Facelift Series II Td5 Auto.

As it happens boys and girls... I have read that LR made something like 800 improvements on the old Series II . I have no idea what the 800 individual improvements are except for the more obvious cosmetic improvements.

I had cause to call the AA out on one occasion when I totally lost power from the accelerator peddle...no it didn't fall off, the pedal stopped talking to the computer. After 10 minutes with the engine switched off the problem disappeared and the accelerator pedal worked normally again!

The AA guy raved about my particular model as being 'the Dogs Gonads' of Disco's because of the improvements to the Gearbox and Engine in particular. The AA guy used to re-map Td5 engines before he became an AA Patrolman

Whatever, I have been thrilled with my first Disco and never looked back since. It does exactly what it says on the packet and drives brilliantly.

Enjoy!

Happy New Year!

Well I love the "BEAST" as the kids call it, like you say it does what it says on the tin. Just keeping an eye on the fuel consumption and it looks like im on target for 500+ miles from full, and thats been mainly town driving.
Compared to my previous TD4 its not 'that bad'....
Forgot to mention too that the dealer threw in a L/R experience day at Coniston hall in North Yorkshire for free!! That should be fun in the summer!
Like a kid with a new toy...

I should also mention the dealer, Armstrong Massey on the A64 near York, best dealer ive ever used ( and thats been a few). We bought out TD4 from there 2 years ago and they have been fantastic at every contact we have had. Even the parts guys and mechanics are courteous and cant do enough to help. If your in the market and this area, try these guys, they also have a really good selection of used landys.

Cheers

Glad you're happy :)

[I'm in West Yorks too, small world!]

I too took teh plunge this weekend and went for a dark blue '52 plate auto ES for £11k; beautiful.

Problem is, despite 115 miles of conservative driving [45 motorway, 40 a&b roads and 30 miles rush-hour] I've returned 22mpg.

Not what I was expecting, I was hoping for around 28mpg, bearing in mind nearly half was 60mph motorway driving :(

She's due for a 60k service in about a month, I sure hope that's the reason.
