View Full Version : Best way to sell a Modded 300TDi?

I have a 1995 Discovery 300TDi that I have done a fair bit of work to. The time has come to reluctantly sell it.

Do you think it would sell better with the mods or without and sell the kit off separately? Do the mods put people off because they think they have been off-roaded and abused or do people look at it the other way and think they have been looked after?

The mods include:

2" Suspension lift
30mm Wheel Spacers
Steering/Sump guard
Front and Rear Diff guards
Detroit TruTrac rear Diff Lock
Winch + Winch Bumper
A-Bar
Spotlights
Dog Guard
Uprated Intercooler
Silicone Turbo Hoses

Probably some more bit too that I cant remember just now.

Recent work done:

New brake discs and pads all round
New springs and shocks all round
New Alternator
New Clutch (Sachs Boge)
New Steering damper

I reckon if I stripped it of bits, I could get £700-£1000 for the bits but do the bits make it worth an extra £700-£1000?

Roughly what is it worth as is and as standard?

Anybody sold one recently?

I just bought a modded 300tdi - not quite as pimped as yours, but 2" lift, steering and diff guards and snorkel, with a recon short block and top end about 12k ago.

It has a whining transfer box, (but then its an early one, so I suspect straight cut gears).

I got that for £2200 - including a spare set of wolf rims with Insa MTs on.

The effort involved in removng all the mods makes it not worth it I reckon - just wait for the right buyer - I reckon 4x4 web is a great place to advertise - I got a lot of enquiries when I sold my 110 on there.

Not everyone wants a boring disco :)

I have seen some modded ones advertised from £3500 right up to £6000 but do they actually ever sell?

I knew I would forget some of the mods:

QT Castor corrected from radius arms
Cranked rear trailing arms
Plasma winch rope
Safari Snorkel
Twin batteries

Whenever i looked on ebay (quite a bit) it seems people never really get the money back that they spent. I dont really know why this is but it seems that way. The same thing goes for bikes too, if it is modified it just doesnt get as much interest, i guess people assume it is abused, or maybe if youre selling something so nice it must have major faults.

Having said that a good write up on ebay DOES seem to make a difference, as well as lots of pics :)

The mods will only be attractive and appreciated by a limited audience who would be willing to pay for them. The majority of potential buyers will be looking for a standard vehicle. Try selling as it is first, but personally I'd sell the Mods seperately (at least some of them) to increase the number of potential buyers.

Thats what I'm thinking, give it a go on ebay with some good photo's and write up, if it does not sell, strip back to nearly standard, just the easy bits, and sell separately. I have found that used bits for modding always seem to make good money.

Hi

What sort of money would you be looking for it with and without the mods, out of interest?

Cheers.

I have a friend who I always promised first refusal, so I will speak to him over the next few days.

Well I thought as standard it would be worth £2250, all the bits would cost around £1500 if not more plus fitting.

So I was hoping for £3000 as it is.

It's done 104K miles, quite tidy except for a scab of blistering lacquer on the nose of the bonnet, about the size of a 50p. The engine runs very well, no smoke apart from a haze of black smoke under hard acceleration. Always starts well, the gearbox has the usual notchiness between 1st and 2nd but I have gotten used to it. The swivel ball seal leak very slightly, they have one-shot grease in them now and have passed the MOT no problems.

I forgot to add:

Extended braided brake lines.
Detachable tow bar
Tank Guard
BFG AT 245/75/16 Done about 10K miles but still almost like new.

Nice car :)

Just stick it on ebay with a reserve set to what you want for it and if it sells it sells.

Not sure about the time of year to think about selling it though.

You will get £3000 it. My '93 200Tdi has 217,000 on the clock now, yours is low mileage, the important bit is the rust, not a bit of blistering on the bonnet, the real rust underneath, it doesn't matter what you've added mechanically if the chassis, sills, body mounts, inner wings, boot floor, etc are rotten then it is only worth a little. If that lot is all sound then you'll get the £3k. If you've done the mods yourself then that can be a concern to some, especially if they're looking to really use the car, if you have receipts for professional fitting that will help. The front swivel leak is a problem, if oil can come out, then water can get in, regardless of there being grease in there water will damage the CV joints.
To convince the buyer I would spray the underside with a "waxoil" brand of your choice. I'd advertise as "professionally modded" at about £3300. Whether it sells at that price depends on how convincing you are at the time.
If it is genuinely a "good car" then someone will give you a good price.
Only IMHO,
Kevin

Thanks guys, very encouraging.

As for the mods being done professionally, I understand where you are coming from but believe me, I am a perfectionist and I know everything has been done right with this truck, I carry my wife and kid in it and I would not cut corners. I trust myself better than any mechanic! But not everybody sees it the same way.

The sills, inner wings and body mounts are sound, not even a sign of rust. The boot floor has some bubbles but was not holed (last time I dared look)

I may fit a new floor and fix the swivels before selling and ask a few hundred more, depends if I get the time to do it.

Hi Jim,
Yeah, you got what I was saying then about the mods, only there are some out there that just bodge it all cheaply, if you demonstrate the same attitude and enthusiasm when talking ro a prospective buyer you'll have no problem,

That's quite a list, I think and hope that if you are patient, you'll get your money.

After all, I'm the guy who has just sold a RHD BM to a Frenchman in Grenoble. I had to be patient, but got there in the end

We picked up the D2 last week so my 300TDi has definetly but reluctantly got to be sold.:( Quite gutted really as I have done things to this one with the intention of keeping it for a long time, but I just don't get the time to do as much off-roading as I would like and it seems a bit daft having 3 cars.

I will be preparing it for sale in the next few weeks, I shall put an ad on this forum as well as on eBay.

Anyone interested in the meantime, please PM me.

So as not to be seen as "offensive" to your fellow LR enthusiasts, can I suggest a touch of diplomacy. Initially advertise it on the forum at a pre-determined price, if you get no takers then by all means put it on ebay.
I have seen many people in the past severly criticised for using LR forums to publish links to ebay and the like, some of the replies are pretty sincere.
Just a thought,
Kevin
