Please help - this started on Tuesday last week and makes the car undrivable in a safe manner.

It drives OK on motorway etc, but around town it intermittently just cuts out when you lift off the accelerator. When you start from cold and leave to idle, it is hit and miss whether it will stall or not. My reckoning is that it has to be something to do with the air supply as with the throttle open it seems to run fine (so must have fuel and be sparking OK ?).

To advise - I fitted a new air flow meter about three months ago - not a genuine Bosch but it has worked OK to now. I removed and cleaned the IACV yesterday, but car still not running properly. I've checked for vacuum leaks and can't find anything obvious.

I've checked breather pipes for blockages - seem OK although one question here - the oil separator in the breather on the drivers side - how is this removed for cleaning - mine appears to be stuck rigid (although not clogged up) is this normal ?

Could my problem be that this cheaper air flow meter is not up to it now the colder weather is here - I'm pretty lost now, any help would be appreciated.

One last question, with the ignition key at position II and the engine not running, my IACV solenoid is energised and you can feel it by touching the IACV assembly - is this normal or is it a sign of failure ?

Thanks - Paul

Not sure if this helps at all, but I had a similar problem many years ago on a Audi 100 Quatro that i had..turned out to be a combination of the Idle valve and cold start valve..on the audi these were combined in one unit.

The Cold start valve can be a pain in the rectum if it goes wrong..I would start with that.

Dear All - a GOOD NEWS update:

Picked up from the dealership today a Bosch air flow meter and a Bosch throttle position sensor - fitted them both and the car is perfect.

It seems to run a lot quieter, is more responsive and is very steady at idle.

A lesson for me.......cheaper air flow meters are not worth it !

I'm glad to hear you've got your Disco sorted - Looks like I'm going to have to bite the bullet and shell out for a pukka Bosch MAF!

If you don't mind me asking, how much did it set you back?

Cheers

Dean - No probs, with the VAT £115 from Stratstone Land Rover.

It's made a real difference though - Good luck with yours, let us know if it solves your problem !

If it's a THOR engine I have a new Idle Air Control Valve and a new throttle body, if you want to play pick and mix. I'm just off J11 M62. PM for phone number.:D
