Hi guys,

My tyres rub on my radius arms when I turn on full lock, is this just needing a toe in adjustment or the fitting of spacers? The tyres are 235/70 R16

Cheers,
Iain

Hi Ian ,
my rangie did this when i put bigger wheels and tyres on - just adjust up the steering stops ( on the swivel hubs) so the tyres don't rub . Spacers will certainly give you more turning circle and you can open the steering stops back up again .
Thinking of spacers myself but i just have this feeling they'll no be that strong ?.
cheers , gordon
PS your old kinetic rope is working well ;)

My tyres where doing the same.
I got spacers and fitted them, been on for about 5 months now I think, dont seem to have any probs, and now rubbing.

Hi guys,

Glad too hear the kinetic ropes being well used, not really thought of the strength issues, id be more concerned with the reduction in the stud length for the wheelnuts, also the cost is off putting, next dry day I will adjust the bumpstops, should do for now

Cheers,
Iain

I personally wouldn't fit spacers though several here would. They're usually manufactured such that you don't have stud length issues.

Try changing your alloys (?) for steel modulars - they have a better offset and you don't have to worry about spacers coming loose. They work great on mine with 235/85.

The spacers I have on mine, are the ones that actualy bolt onto the hub, then the wheels bolt onto them, so you dont really loose any of the stud length, and gain about 40cms width on the distance between the tyres (I think). Cant think of the proper name for them, but I am sure you know the ones I mean. I saw a friend put little spacers on his nissan once, and they knackered his car up, so I dont trust them little shim type ones!

40cms?? Sure you don't mean 40mm? (40cm = 16 inches)

I meant 40 mm and 4 cms, just got confused hahaha, have been under the disco for about 3 days painting and rustproofing, so please forgive the less than coherent post hahaha

Drag up old threads time lol,

I've never got round to adjusting the bump stop to cure the tyre rub. Its getting new bushes, shocks and springs put on then will be taken down to get the wheel alignment sorted. Its only rubbing on the one side (passenger) when nearlly on full lock, just wondering if I should get the guy doing my springs etc to adjust the bump stops or leave it till after i've had it aligned.

Does it matter either way?!?

Cheers,
Iain

The lock stops have no effect on the tracking at all.

If it is only rubbing on one lock, you will probably find it will clear up if the tracking is adjusted correctly. Especially if you get the four wheel alignment done. It might just make them both rub though in which case the spacers/stop adjustment would be the next step. ;)

Sounds like the steering stops then - unless your alignment IS out on one side. I have 235/85s on Daphne, and have never had a problem.
Adjusting the steering stops is a doddle, we did a friend's Defender 110 lying in a field between sections in an ARC trial, him on one side, me on the other, took about 2 minutes :D Which was good 'cos we only had 5 :D

Hi guys,

Thanks for the thoughts. Im hoping that the tracking will cure it, if steering is allowed to centre it pulls to the left, will find out this weeek when I get it done, on top of my list of everything else

Cheers,
Iain
