cost me £370 for having my head took off, skimmed and refited this year, by a independant garage, not land rover. (this was 300TDI)

did you have same sort of symptons or did it just go ? i have found a product that is meant to seal the break in the gasket ( STEEL SEAL ) but am not sure ??!!! lokks like it will work . i dont know whether to try it just to see if it is gasket.then if it remedies it i know that i will have to have it done ..

just a thought but did you bleed the system when you put the new rad in?

Sean: Take my advice, stop guessing and hoping and admit you're out of your depth. If it is the head gasket, and I believe it is exactly that from what you describe, you need proper advice from a proper known mechanic. There is no magic cheap fix for a blown h/g. It will need repairing properly. If Steel Seal was the magic answer, everybody would be talking about it here. They're not.

Bite the bullet and get a proper diagnosis...................................you know it makes sense.

I had a situation where i was going down the road and the temp guage went up rapidlly, then it went back to its normal 2/4ish position.... the heater stopped blowing hot.

Stopped and expansion tank top had blown off.... filled it up and makeshifted another top... EXACTLY same thing happened, all was well, heater happily blowing hot air, then temp gauge goes up, heater blows cold, water all over road.

Sure you might not be losing all the water i was, but sounds like the same thing to me.

Out of interest the breakdown people were discussing thermostat (which they checked, all was fine) and water pump in my case.

It was a warped head.

From what i can understand, if your car overheats there is a good chance the head gets warped.

Like the guy said, just take it to a garage cos you are most likely wasting money on water pumps, thermostats and magic steel seal things..

would like to know how you get on, and good luck,

Like i said it cost me 370, dunno if thats a lot or not but dont let em rip you off! :)

the guy who actually fitted my rad works on landrovers and uesd to work for them direct. when he fitted it he didnt think that it was h/g but who knows not everybody is an expert no matter what. i did buy some of that "magic" steel seal and have put it in . i have run it and all seems fine so far . will take it to the landrover garage up the road to me when it re-opens after new year so until then will have to wait and see and hope. will let you all know outcome. cheers. by the way thanx for replying it does help when people put their input of advice and knowledge. !!!!!

Sean biggest prob with d2 when head gasket blows or starts to is the locating dowels are plastic and they break allowing the cyl head to shift sideways and allowing the valves to mark the cyl bore scrapping the engine .

Meant to say easy way to see if pump is okay is remove header tank cap and you can see a little waterfall effect from one of the small return pipes.

Lynall, surely this would only prove the pump is- well pumping.
I'm interested because I ripped my head off only to discover problem was a leaking water pump.
As to the guy above with £370 to sort out gasket AND warped head-
You got a major bargain
