I need to get ready for the worst but thought it prudent to see what you guys think first. Its a 95 300Tdi manual and it won't go into 4th 5th or reverse. The other gears are fine so I guess the clutch is okay. Could this just be a worn linkage that needs adjusting/lubricated or is it more likely to be the box which smells like a lot of money???
Also any recomendations of where to take it in the Aberdeen area??
Many thanks

4th and 5th are at opposite ends of the gearbox and on different selectors, I'd look at the linkage first.

take out the ctr console, under that you may have to drill a load of rivets out that hold the rubber plate in the floor unless its been out before it may be self tapers. when you take this out you'll see the top of the box. there is a like selector plate which the springs sit against, gives you the self centreing feeling on the lever (iff you get me) any way this plate can fracture and jam up the gears. take a look at that first, alan....

Hi Alan, many thanks for the advice. This may well be an area to explore as the"centreing" that you mention hasn't happened for a long time in the gearbox and I believe this a common fault due to these springs, it may be its finally failed altogether - many thanks again.
