hi,can anyone tell me if you can do any damage to the vehicle by driving the freelander with the prop removed,as ive been told you can remove the prop to use as a 2 wheel drive.

No problems running it in two wheel drive. Just takeoff both propshafts and the VCU as one assembly, don't split them.

You can drive it with the front prop removed.. but this is usually when the viscous coupling has siezed.. If everything is working fine leave the prop in place. Its not going to damage the freelander with the prop removed but it may upset the handling and would probably give you grief with insurance if you bumped it with the prop missing!

If the VC is siezed or starting to, take the whole lot off. It's easier and you get a lot of weight off the transmission. If the IRD or rear diff are already damaged, they need replacing, they continue to turn and can jam up if the teeth are damaged.

There are probably more older Freelanders driving around without propshafts than most people realise. You should always check they are there before you pass money across. If they aren't there, walk away.

:) Hi, been running my 98 model L series diesel without propshaft for over two years now with no probs. Tyre wear is hardly noticeable, and can easily get 40 mpg plus on a run - even get 34+ pulling the caravan. If you don't need the 4wd take it off and stick it under the bed!! A Guid New Year tae wan an aw, dru. :D

lol.. mine was running in 2 wheel drive when I bought it... had a slack VCU!

If you do go 2WD just be wary of the wheelspin on greasy roads... also to fast on wet roundabouts can cause a bit of oversteer which can catch you out if your not ready for it!

quick trip to TEMPL4R's magic kingdom soon sorted mine out! and i'm back in 4WD!
