Laptop not recording

The laptop will not record sound with the external mic. Can I have turned it off? if so how? and how di I turn it back on again? I have checked the mic with another computer and it works fine. :confused:

When I record stuff from tapes or speech for Family History to my editing program, I have to tell it where and which to use. Line in, Mic, etc. I do forget at times and nothing happens.
