im trying to put together a minimal tool kit for a 130 3.5 v8 which has had a camper conversion . i dont want to carry socket and spanner sizes that will never get used. i understand some jobs may need specialist tools, some of which i will include. i like to be prepared for most things but dont fancy carrying a huge tool chest for space and weight reasons. a list of essential sizes af/metric socket pieces and spanners would be most useful?
cheers

them multi socket things are good the ones that fit several different sizes you would only need about 4 of them. i would say the most common size spanners and sockets are 7mm 10mm 11mm 13mm 15mm 16mm 17mm 19mm 21mm they tend to do most things then of course you should have 2 adjustable spanners one large and one small. then carry one of them screw drivers with the changerball heads so if one brakes you just change the head rather than lose the driver. and dont forget the hammer and can of WD40 i also carry a multi meter for tracking them electrical faults, and i also have a gas powered solder gun that has different heads including a blowlamp that is very usefully. i also carry a leatherman multi tool on me at all times that has got me out of trouble more than once. i also carry a role of gaffer tape and a tube of quick steal they are both great for quick fixes. i also carry a long length of brake cable from a push bike if a cable brakes i can make a new one up using quick steal to make the ends as a quick fix till i can get a new one.

as above but to include a tube of silicon stashed somewhere...perfect for gaskets/sticking thinks.

I carry a full set of metiric spanners (upto 19mm), a 24mm spanner, offset 32mm (?) spanner for the viscus fan, chain spanner for oil filters, a 9/16th spanner, an AJ, 2 sets of mole grips, large multiheaded screwdriver and a small one, 1/2 ratchet drive with a load of sockets, extending breaker bar with a 27mm socket (doubles as a wheel brace), crimper, retracting knife.

It all fits in an ex army "50 cal" ammo box so takes up little space (not very organised inside it though). I also have a handfull of electrical connectors and blade fuses floating around in the bottom of it.

I also have a very usfull tool set I used to carry when I rode a bike. Size of a pencil case in a fabric pouch. Contains a folding hammer (really) that doubles as a 1/4 ratchet set and screw driver set! Not seen its like in 15 years!

Ammo boxes make good tool boxes and recovery kit boxes :)

Along with a range of spanners and sockets, when traveling far afield I also take a breaker bar, lump hammer, cable ties, and a range of ratchet straps just incase things fall apart :D
