The pup is 4 months old, she is ok day time as she can get into the garden no mess.
Night time we had her in a dog cage but she would howl the house down when she wanted the toilet at 4 am, so we have left her free, we have puddles and poo in the morning.
I go to bed late and take them both out into the garden, the dog gets on with it cocks his leg 3-4 times, she just sits there, I'll go to the toilet when I want to
Any ideas we've not had a bitch before.

4 months old is a bit young to expect an all night pee/poo free envoiroment :)
Stick with the cage idea, it really is a very good way of house training as they will not soil their own bed unless unavoidable.
Howls the house down at 4.am........ alas you must ignore it, after a few days she will get the message.
So far your action has taught her howling gets a response, so she will do it more

No worries, been there a few times myself!
She will have a few off days, you just need to have a routine and stick to it. They soon accept it :)

Up date tried her out of the cage last week, she's not done anything over night for a full week so I think we've got there. :)

Hi There,
I have a 8mth old lab, we picked him up at 3mth and cage trained him. boy did he howl at night, i slept downstairs with his cage next to me and then every night for a fortnight, i would move the cage further away. after 2 wks he was fine. we did'nt feed later than 6pm and took away his water before 9pm. he was house trained in no time. :)
What puppy do you have?

It is such a releif when you get them house trained. First night our lab stayed with us she was a bit stressed, we found putting her cage in a dark corner really helped, along with an old towel or blanket. Not missing hosing the cage out at 6am any more :D

Jarvis cried the first night and not since. He graduated from his cage fairly early on and has NEVER done a poo in our house. I think we've been really lucky. He now sleeps in the kitchen (although he did wake me at 4.00am today because he needed to go outside - better than finding a pile in the morning, I suppose...)
