I've been offered a 94 disco with a V8 and LPG converted. The vehicle has done 140k, is clean and tidy with no visible rust. It runs and drives nice. The price is £1000, is this a fair price for a disco of this year ? I currently have a S3 109 2.5na pickup and could do with the extra seating offered by the disco. Are they as good off road as it looks lower or will i have to spend serious dosh on raising it ? I must say i,m very tempted to go for it as it drives silky smooth.

Well if it is as good as you say it is then that’s not a bad price. 140k is a little high for a v8 but if you know the history and it’s been well serviced then you should be ok. I would recommend more frequent oil changes though. The Discovery is very very good off-road and will go places most other Land Rovers will without modification. Things like side steps and front spoiler tend to get in the way but other than that they are a very capable vehicle. I’m sure someone will add to this but things to check for rust, chassis, sills, rear wheel arch/inside rear doors, boot floor etc. All are common places to go on discos. Other than that, for £1k what more could you want

is that the last of the 200 or an early 300. which ever seems a fair price iff its tidy.v8's usualy fetch a little less than deisels. there good off road only differenc id say is the overhang at either end. well happy with mine. check sills rear body mounts and crossmember, and lift the carpet in the back and check the rear floor . prone to rust. cheap part but labour aint. check for backlash in the drive train .oh and inner wings front under the bonnet. not structural though. iff its a 5 door open rear doors and check by the door stricker. prone to hole there too is m.o.t able . chassis dont seem to give much trouble. chech difflock and high low more disco are used as school run vehicles than defenders and series vehicles (can seize up). hope this helps. alan.....

Well first of all you should get a light on the dash, but that by no means tells you if its working. Simply just to notify you if it is engaged or not. 2 ways to check, get it stuck in mud..... Or the other is to engage diff lock and then jack up one wheel. Try to turn it by hand. If it doesn’t turn then its working. Again disengage diff lock and the wheel should then turn. You may need to drive it back and forth to get diff lock in and out. That should do it

When was the lpg conversion done, What paperwork comes with it, eg Installation Cert, annual servicing paperwork?

It needs to be perfect bodywise or you'll just throw money at it.

£1000 sounds too much to me - start at £500.

L, M and N regd are making about £500 - £600 around here, diesels closer to £900.

We're sending 300 tdis through the auctions between £900 and £1200.

The gas instalation was replaced 3 years ago by me (authorised installer)and has been serviced by me for a fair while now. I know the vehicle is in good nick. It was just the pricing i was concerned with as i dont buy and sell vehicles and really have little to do with disco's

That's excellent news that you know the vehicle so well - re pricing I still think that £1000 is significantly too high.

If it was sold to anyone else, they wouldn't know the vehicle like you do, so it's market value remains, as others have also said, at £500-£600.

I respect your comments, especially chris, but the prices you are quoting cant be right.
I have been looking for a disco recently,on the NW auto trader round here M/N reg's are anything from £2-£3k !
I looked at an M reg today in a garage, nice and shiny, valeted to death, but a quick poke had my finger through in a couple of places. (NSF body mount,NSR arch)£1995. With 12 months MOT!

Any disco its rust rust rust, soon as they start the usally points still, rear x-member, boot, you'll be luckly even after fixing them to get more than 2 years out of them.

The inner wings go, footwells, all the mounts, then it speads all underneath, little patches here and there within months great chuncks drop off.

lot depends on the vechicle in question, bit in general they are rust buckets

Tell me about it,I had to get rid of my 200TDi not long ago as it was falling to bits.
It lasted long enough for me to win the novice trophy RTV with my club.BIG trophy that I keep for a year.:D

We send most of our old Discoverys to the auctions N, we can't retail them as people want a warranty. They would need to be around the £1700 mark for that, plus we don't really sell anything much older than a W regd.

Buy private and you will steal one. As you all know, I got my Jeep cheap and sold an R plate 2.5 diesel sport with 80,000 on it ( the same as mine) 2 weeks ago. I paid £1100 for it. It was immaculate ( plus the new tyres and wheels are on my truck :))

You have to buy private, slag the vehicle off and pay cash. Traders are too wiley to get one over, they'll have your pants off. It's what they do for a living. Anything you want to buy is the biggest piece of rubbish going, when you sell, it's immaculate, unique, a classic....:)

Hi there, there is a world of difference between what a seller, private or dealer, is asking for a vehicle and what they ACTUALLY get.

Shop around, negotiate hard and you will find a good 'un.

Bought my 94 V8 ES auto off ebay for £1600 recently. Came with 12 months tax & MOT and had 80000 miles and little history. It isn't rusty and I would say it is good condition (not perfect). I've had it for 3 months and had to spend £150 on it so far (new battery and fix the exhaust). Bought it as a toy, but I like it so much I drive it all the time now and gave my wife the XC90.

Mine isn't LPG though and does 15/16 MPG.

Check out the sold prices on ebay. A 94 V8 with 175000 miles & LPG just sold yesterday for £1750.

Pat.
