while driving my disco the other day discovery 1 300tdi ES Auto 1996, i heard what sounded like a rattling sound coming from what i thought was the turbo. shortly after that i lost power and the CHECK ENGINE warning light came on and the disco stopped.

turned off the engine and then started the engine while listening to the turbo, can't be sure but i think it a goner.

RAC to the rescue, back home engine will start but pressing the throttle makes no difference to the rpm, engine just idles

spoke to a dealer today and as my disco is 1996, hes says the computer system would have any codes as to why the check engine light was on, o no point in plugging it in?

today i checked all the pipes around the turbo, couldn't find any splits, checked all connections and found nothing wrong

had some one else start the engine while i watched, i could see what appeared to be exhaust smoke coming from the rear of the engine, could it be a cylinder head gasket?

also when idling when u listen to the engine run you would swear that the sound near the turbo was like an exhaust with a hole in it? but i could not find any blow out?

will get it into the garage tomorrow now i have finished working on my landy 90

cant figure this out, can anybody help and point me in the right direction..........................many thanks

If it's the turbo, the engine will run but slowly, perhaps with lots of smoke.

If it the head gasket, you will have pressure in the cooling system, possibly white exhaust smoke, overheating and 'mayonaise' appearing on the oil filler cap.

Sounds more like your electronics have opened the turbo wastegate to me.

TDi wastegate not electrically controlled like TD5.

easy to check. get someone to start it from cold, put your hand round the back of the cylinder head between the bulkhead, bet you'll feel compresion blowing out. its common for the 300 to blow the head gasket at no 4 cylinder blows to atmoshere.sounds like head gaket to me !.alan.....
