View Full Version : Stuck locking wheel nut

Have a slow puncture on the front left wheel but can't get the bl00dy locking wheel nut off. It's obviously stuck but can't get enough leverage on it to loosen it because of using the locking wheel nut attachment. There's just too much play, everytime I try it just pulls the attachment off at an angle and ends up mishaping the nut and attachment. Tried with an airgun too, so that i'm not pulling it at an angle with a wrench, but it still didn't budge.
How can I get it off? Whacking it with a hammer? WD40? break it to get it out?

A mate of mine lost the special socket for his locking wheel nuts. I was able to get all four off with the help of a hammer and chiesel. Once you've broken the 'lock' between the nut and the stud you might be able to unscrew the offending lock nuts off by hand.
The ones I did weren't rusty and came off quite easily.

That might be an option then, I've given it a good spray with WD40 to try and penetrate (give it a few more over the course of the next couple of days) but not too hopeful. The I think i'll try the blow torch. Then I think it's gonna be hammer and chisel time.

I hammered a slightly smaller socket on my mates locking wheel nuts when he lost the key to his locking nuts. needs a big hammer though.

Safer but less effective than a blowtorch is a paint remover, the hairdrier type. They produce a lot of heat and risk less damage than a naked flame - worth a try if you have one.

I had the same thing just after I bought my disco. What I ended uo doing was I placed a jack under the bend in the wheel spanner and used that to prevent the spanner from 'twisting' and loosing grip. Efectivly, the jack takes up the downward force allowing you to get a better turn on the nut.
Not sure if that explains it well enough - It worked for me.
If the nut isn't too far gone, it may work for you.

I had a puncture and the RAC man tapped on a impact socket one that was a squeeze and then just used a breaker bar to crack it off, job done, but your not going to be able you use it again thou
