Right this is copied for another forum (4x4 response not LR focussed) and is someone i know

I'm at my wits end with this bloody 300tdi disco.

Engine appears to lag and then at times a total power loss causing it to stall, particularly on hills. Doesn't start very well needs to be cranked for a while to get it going. Bizarely then sometimes it'll be ok:eek:

What have I done so far?

Changed lift pump, fuel filter, sender unit and fuel leak off pipes on the injectors and bled the system throughly each time.

Has had this problem intermittently on and off for the last year and in that time has had the timing done, changed the stop solenoid and a couple of lift pumps, each has cured it temporarlily for a month or 2 then it starts again.

Drained the sedimentor and removed and cleaned the bottom intercooler hose (no excessive oil in it).

2 days ago was awful, yesterday ok and now virtually undriveable.

Anybody lend an idea, hand or even a box of matches

Have you checked the pipes comin off the sender unit for small holes?

When he cranks the engine, does it smoke from the exhaust straight away?

As Pike says, check the top of the sedimenter and the pipes to it for pinholes.

If your friend primes the injector pump, then trys to start, does it fire up straight away?

That would be a sign of syphoning back, ( used to happen to my combine harvester overnight) so a faulty lift pump valve or an air leak.

Check the tank is venting properly. If you fill up, it might run OK for a while, get a vacuum in the tank and struggle to run, take the cap off and it runs Ok again.

Sorry to butt in but im having a similar problem with my 200tdi Land Rover 90, its a disco engine, (was a 2.5td 19j engine) and it seems to run ok for a bit and then it seems to just die on me, similar symtpoms as described above seems like a lack of fuel, doesn't matter how much fuel there is in the tank, ive fitted a new fuel filter, fuel lift pump and checked all the pipes in the engine bay, is there a sedimenter fitted in the standard landrover 90 tank? or any other advise would help

Thanks
