hi everyone i am new here and am finding this site really usefull i was wondering if you would be so kind to help me i am looking at purchaseing my first landrover after wanting one for years idealy i would want a ex mod 110 diesel 2.5 na i have about 2000 to spend which is a lot for me so dont want to make any mistakes what mpg can i expect from this engine and whats it like for reliabeity is there anything i need to look out for really any information you have that you think would be usefull would be really appriciated many thanks:)

I think you may not get what you'd be after. Ex-Military motors are quite sought after, and having been watching their prices over the past few months they appear to go for £3,000 upwards if they're a fairly tidy 110. I think that you would have more success getting a decent Ex-MOD Series 3 109-inch for that amount of money.
The 2.5 Normally Aspirated engine is a longer stroke version of the old 2.25 Litre diesel that had been in use since 1962. The crank bearings were increased from three to five in the late 1970s/early 1980s in preparation for increasing the stroke. Other than other small changes like the injector pump becoming belt driven rather than cam driven, the two engines are very similar in design and function. This means that the 2.5 NA is a very strong engine and is a very reliable engine. Their only fault so to speak is that they are also slow in a vehicle as big and heavy as a 110.
The Series buying guide would be worthwhile reading, since both the coil sprung utility models and the leaf sprung models suffer very similar issues with corrosion. Thanks rich very usefull info i know ive got high hopes i have seen a few early 110s go for the 2000 pound mark but your right a good 1 will cost more thanks again mate
