Hi, I have never serviced my own car before. But now I have a Disco (which i'm lead to believe are easy enough to work on) I think i'll have a bash.

What do I need to do?

Oilchange
Change sparkplugs
Air filter?
Fuel filter?

Which Disco is it?

V8 petrol, Tdi diesel? Td5 diesel.

The Tdi's are a piece of cake to service. (routine service that is ;))

It's a Disco 2 V8

Sorry then... I can't give you any qualified advice. :( I know the Tdi's. I guess that the V8 will be straight forward though.... sparkplugs etc., filters, oilchange, check fluid levels and Bob's your uncle.

I know that not everyone likes the haynes manuals, but I found it useful. In there you will find exactly what needs to be done at every service interval, 6000, 30,000 miles ect. Its displayed in a list format with chapter references so you can read up on how to carry out the work.
This way you will know exactly what needs to be done, enable you to collect the parts, read up and see if you can carry out the job etc. Do take it with a pinch of salt however, in the book they work on new, clean cars not some 10 year old rust bag (like mine). I found it to be a very useful reference, but nothing beats the forums for all the woes and probs of working on discos, and what to expect to go wrong next.

I picked up the RAVE CD off ebay. This gives the full D2 workshop manual on CD. I think it's fantastic and use it in conjunction with Haynes. I think I only paid 3 quid for it.

One downside is that both are sketchy on the sizes of sockets etc needed for jobs. I had to do some web surfing to find gear box drain plug etc.

Routine servicing on D2 is definitely DIY, especially if you have a garage to work in.

I also found a halogen inspection lamp to be very useful for poking around the car.

Cheers

Doddle change the oil when its cold so it doesnt run and squirt every where, lay a large piece of cardboard on the floor keeps you warm and the floor clean.
Discoweb.org may be worth a look nearly all v8.

I was always told you should change oil hot? Cold would be easier, I admit!

changing the oil hot enables it to run more easily, it removes more sludge from the sump but it does make a real mess. have plenty of absorbent materials to hand.

Make sure you clean out the breathers on the rocker covers. The 2 pipes that go to the intake need to be checked for collapsing and splits.
