Can anyone tell me what exactly the rotor filter does on a TD5 Discovery 2003, I didnt even know I had one until a couple of days ago .
So maybe I should have this changed as a matter of course.

It's a centrifuge filter, it spins and uses centrifugal force to send the heavy muck to the wall of the rotor casing. The muck sticks and you change the rotor as it nearly fills up.
A good sign is the noise it makes dying down. Fit a new one and you can hear it.

Filters about 10% of the oil very efficient thats why the normal filter has a 36k change interval.

Rotor filter change every oil change 12k.
