View Full Version : Noisy fuel pump

When I started up (01 TD5) on Sunday, the fuel pump sounded a good bit noisier than usual; soon returned to normal. Happened again this morning, again settled down to normal quickly.

Presumably it's telling me its had enough, but do I need to deal with it asap, or do they carry on like this indefinitely?

Its oneof two things either the pump filters are blocked or its on its way out.
To clean filters remove pump and stand in a bowl and strip it down they are very coarse strainers but mine did block up.

Pics are of bottom filter on the swirl pot , filter removed from the swirl pot, the filter inside the swirl pot on the bottom of the pump and cutting the carpet to remove the pump saves stripping all the trim out.

Useful pics Lynall, thanks very much.

So far all I've done is change the fuel filter; someone suggested that if it's at all restricted it can make the pump labour a bit. It was quiet this morning, so fingers crossed.

Keeping an eye on ebay all the same, but I can only see defender pumps at £100; the ones listed for Discos seem to be around £175. Is there any difference?
