I Have just had the pleasure of seeing what happens when a Turbo blows. Lots of smoke and then no power.

I would like to fix my now dead Disco but am not sure of where to get a new Turbo from and how much thay are, any ideas and has any one had any problems changing the turbo.

I have looked on the net and for the bits I need I am given to part numbers which correspond to two other numbers either 'to 1a 736339' or 'from 2a 736340'. What are these two numbers and what do they mean?

Hi, welcome to the forum :) The numbers you quote are the last 8 digits of your VIN, and it's how 'change points' are usually identified when buying parts. I *think* 1A was 2001 model year, and 2A was 2002, but to make sure you get exactly the right part, check the VIN on your V5 or the plate on the vehicle.

Sorry, should also add, before 1A they were letters of the alphabet, eg TA, VA, WA etc, up to YA when they then changed over to 1A ...

1A*** or 2A*** refer to the Vehicle Identity Number -VIN. Found under bonnet or in log book. Think your 99 TD5 will be 1A. But check.

Many thanks for the chassis information, which will help when I order the turbo.
Should I trust a Turbo from ebay, surely trusting an ebay seller could be a bit dodgy. Am I being over cautios, may be! I would prefer to get one with some warranty. I have been given a quote from Garretts but they seem very expensive.
Any other manufacturers that you lot have had good dealing with would be appreciated.
Thanks.

If I needed a turbo and could get one for 50 quid I'd jump at it. There are lots of breakers selling TD5 parts on ebay. Even if they are adverising someting else, send em a message for a quote for a turbo. You may get lucky and get one off a lowish mileage car.

Maybe better to save your money for when your next part is needed.

Just thinking, it says in the handbook that you should idle the car for 10 seconds before switching off, to let the turbo spin down with oil pressure. I bet that was never done in my car in the 8 years before I bought it.

Cheers
