What colours the smoke? does it idle smoothly? what does it drive like? have you checked the inj pump timing?, what year is the car manual or auto.

the smoke is blue,,unburnt fuel(i think)
it idels a little rough,,it will drive but only very slow,,no power at all wont go above 20 mph,,when u rev it when it stood it revs up for about 2 seconds then looses the power and there is loads of smoke,,
its a p reg, 163000 miles manual

Blue smoke sounds like oil being burnt, if it was mine i would take the head off and have a look, head gasket a lot cheaper than a inj pump, to see if all is okay.
Have a look at the inj pump if its got a round plug with i think about 7/8 wires its an edc pump, also to confirm look at the trunking betweent the air filter and the turbo if its just a piece of ribbed pipe its a normal pump, if theres a box bolted in the middle of the pipe its an edc pump.

Hi, Just wondering what the resolution of this was. Sorry, I know it's a really old thread, but I have exactly the same symptoms.

My 1994 300Tdi Disco (200k kms on the clock now) blew a huge cloud of smoke while on the motorway. She immediately started to idle really roughly. Not running on all cylinders.

Mechanic reckons the injector failed and was really surprised as they do not see this happen very often apparently.
The same injector (replaced one) failed a couple of days after the replacement. Same symptoms.

The mechanic shop are landrover specialists, but could not explain why it was failing. They replaced it a second time and it has lasted for about 4 months, but blew again tonight.

Any clues? At a bit of a loss.

We don't get 300tdi injectors failing either. Maybe the injector should go to a Bosch agent to find out why it failed - there is little to go wrong in there. As you have had two fail it rather looks like the injector pump instead.

Hi Jim/ Dean,

Thanks for those posts. Injector pump sounds like the ticket.

I guess some of that rubber is clogging up the injector some how or other. This has happened to my truck three times in 4 months. Same injector replaced with second-hand parts twice:(

Will update you when I have an outcome.

BTW Dean, I'm not so local to cleveland. Auckland, NZ;)

Cheers
