I live in rural north-east Scotland and have to travel across country area through work so having a Discovery, is a boon and especially during not always mild winters. So why do politicians target every owner as a city Chelsea-tractor driver? Not sure what the latest tax moves will means, but given the price of petrol it would be nice if some cash could go to filling in potholes in even main roads across Aberdeenshire.....

I'm with you on that score - I live in Banchory and the pot holes are amazing, you need a 4x4 round here sometimes.
I just don't know where the government is coming from on this one especially on the people carriers. Generally people buy people carriers to do just that. Families with several kids cant get in a Nissan Micra they need something bigger. If they put the tax on the fuel it would all sort itself out apart from the fact they have already put tax on the fuel and want to sting us some more..... bring back the conservatives.....well maybe not:D

Roads aside, there are people in the UK who simply need to own a 4x4. Anyone with horses, any farmer or labourer... I find it disgusting that we are taxed to the hilt and essentially penalised for a minority of London Chelsea tractor owning multi millionaires.
Alistair Darling has got it completely wrong (as usual) for us, the punters. He is trying to get to the people who can actually aford all these tax rises. Ultimately I think this should be a regional thing. You should be taxed if you live in London and own an 2006 to 2008 4x4 when it is not a necessity.
The other option is for people with a trade requiring such vehicles to be given some kind of discount when it comes to renewing their road tax.
Whatever the party, we will always get taxed and MP's will always be able to get their subisdised 2nd house...
After all, someone has to pay for their £6k kitchen allowance...

a tradesman, self-employed, will claim for vehicle running costs as a business expense on his/her tax return and so is not really effected, same as the chelsea tractor drivers who probably have businesses and get tax breaks on the vehicles they own...

I dont think it should matter if you need one or not as that is just falling in line with all the greens:(.
If you want one and can afford it have one and stop worrying.:)
I went to Germany and the alps recently over winter and there was snow everywhere, roads as slippy as hell and everybody just drove normal cars, 4x4 were noticable by there absence.
Only D2 i saw in nearly 2000 miles was the one i was driving and one in Switzerland.

im only 15 and im rebuilding a series 3 88 but something that really ****es me off is that people critasise those in old cars that have poor fuel econemy. evryone is so crazy about toyota prius and all those hybrids and they never think about all the pollution involved in manifacturing and shipping, these cars will probably be "out of fassion" in a few years or there will be some new design, so they will be on the scrap heeps before we know it. if you ask me, i would say that is more polluting than a 30 year old car that will be around for many years to come!

Yes the so called Prius of the future is not all its mad up to be.... i read somewhere a while ago (prob one sunday morning b4 taking my 4x4 polution making vehicle out on a days trailing)that if you look at the cost of disposing a prius its a lot more than most cars as its got so many bloody batt cells in it ,and all the other stuff that cost a blooming fortune to manufacture in the first place and all the cost of developing it.
And this Bio fuel ,mmm so the experts say if u take into account all the pollution that is given out by the pesticides used to produce the green stuff it is in fact a - effect? thats minus ,so listen up all u MP's look else where to tax people and look at your own affairs ,i mean £10k for a bloody kitchen:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:
