View Full Version : The adventure is over

We can say that our recent African adventure is now over as yesterday we collected the 110 from the docks and drove her home. Mind that was not without adventure. We decided it was cheaper to go to the docks by train rather than using a 2nd Land rover. We got to the station only to find the excessive high winds the previous day had brought down the power lines so the regular train service south was cancelled and trains were introduced to take passengers half way then those going the full journey had to change to the high speed variety for the rest of the journey. We made it only 1 hour late and then found that the car wouldn't start in the container :confused: or out of it for that matter. This happened on the way out also. Eventually by powering straight to the engine we got it away and drove home with no more problems.
Now to empty her and clean her then a good service before deciding where the next adventure will be.

Can I be dreadfully rude Margaret and ask how much it cost to ship the Landie to Africa and which were you ports of arrival and embarkation please?
Roger.

You're not being rude at all Roger.
We ship with a German company called MACS shipping who feeder the containers from UK ports to Antwerp where they are loaded onto the carrier and shipped south. We go from Immingham to Walvis Bay in Namibia but they also sail from near Barking to WB then to Cape Town and Durban (mind we have been warned off using Durban). Costs are per single journey, going south we paid £1300 for shipping plus £350 approx for port costs in WB. The return was £975 plus the port costs , £145 for the customs scan in Rotterdam (cos they wanted to check the container when it arrived in europe) then £35 for UK customs documentation fee - they stamped the carnet without even checking the vehicle which was still locked in the container when we got there yesterday - a total of £1150 plus the WB costs which haven't yet appeared on the bank statement!!!!!!!!
Each time we have done this the cost coming home was less than going out. Shipping costs are based on the US$ on the day of loading.
You need a shipping agent at each end We use John Good in the UK and Woker Freight in WB
Hope this answers your query
Margaret
Hi Margaret,
Another question please: how do you go about obtaining your Carnet de Passage?
Cheers,

Thanks Margaret - very informative. I have no immediate need to ship a landie to RSA, but as you know, Africa has gripped me as no other place I have visited before.
I'm not sure if its the people I met, the food, the scenery or the ambience, but I am desperate to go back and see my friends there. :) I'm just thinking out loud at the moment. :D
Roger.

Two answers in one if you boys do't mind.:D:D
Firstly the carnet is obtained from RAC Travel Services in Bristol. I will get you the full details if you wish.
To Roger -- yes Africa certainly bites:D:D:D we went in 2004 after we retired seeing it as a once in a lifetime journey !! We returned the following year for 3 months and as you now well know we have just spent 6 months over there.
As you say the people, and the general ambience of the country are the call back. Before our first trip we were told it wouldn't be the last as we would have to return to take the sand back off our shoes ;);)

Good morning Roger and AJ
Roger. As far as I'm concerned there's nothing rude about asking shipping prices. To me that's part of the reason a forum exists.
I don't know if you followed us while we were in Africa.
Theres a couple of places to look

Sorry if you've alredy done them....
Cheers Margaret. It's one of things that everyone knows of their existence but totally ignorant as to how to go about obtaining them.
Many thanks. ;)

Oh sorry Kev', I thought climate was classified under ambience. Yes, you're right, the climate; although I enjoyed Africa in early spring, while Conkers was steaming a bit in the Congo in early summer. :D You know the colour of my hair - I'm not sure I could do the Skeleton Coast in January.

I found the Congo climate quit pleasant, reminiscient of the very best days of an English summer, Marc said it was probably due to it being overcast in the rainy season keeping it relatively cool, although the heat was turned up in Botswana and northern ZA but I wasn't complaining;).

Good evening Margaret. I'm planning to ship my expedition Range Rover to from the UK to Walvis Bay and drive it on to East Africa. Any chance you could let me have the the contacts for RAC Travel Services in Bristol for the Carnet?
Patrick
Patrick an idea is would be maybe to private mail (PM) Margaret. She might not check this post for a while so a PM might work better. Don't know though if you can do it until a certain number of posts have been made by you first. Try and then check with one of the moderators if it doesn't work.
