I am looking at ditching my 200 TDi and buying a TD5. I am searching for cars with a reg date no later than Feb 2001 due to the tax situation.

So, what are the most immediate TD5 specific things to look out for to help prevent me buying a lemon?

Cheers

John

since i got a S , I always wondered why I did not get a ES, I suppose I just bought my first landrover TD5 because it was there when i had the cash.
A sensible person with all the time in the world would probably spent cash on one of those AA inspections that you can buy, That is when a very nice man from the AA looks around the car with a form and ticks loads of boxes and then makes a report about the car.
I could never do that, When i buy a car I just look for oil leaks and bad sounds etc, but in the end I alway fear buying a lemon. Think about the expensive repairs that could happen.......Engine,Gearbox, suspension, brakes, etc. .....remember that parts are cheaper on ebay, and maindealers are expensive, Good luck. Let us all know how you do....
Unless someone here can sell you a bargin????????? Give £7000 cash (no offers) and you can buy mine

One of best things to check out - apart from overall condition of vehicle - is paperwork. Full service history invoices etc. With my original Discovery 200 I went for an AA inspection which was pretty expensive but did highlight steering box problems that could have been costly but were done by trade seller. But I went for latest Td5 ES due to its low miles and full service book and, touch wood, no problems so far. Good luck and just choose carefully.

Two threads running side by side! 1/3/01 is some sort of shut off point for the new tax situation

I in the process of buying a TD5 ES premium, 04.. waitin on a vehicle inspection / report etc..at a cost of £235, mght sound like a lot (in fact it is ) but could save me a lot if major faults are found n that.
It does have the full dealer history but is a ex lease vehicle with 97k on the clock, it is down in S Wales, so it also saves me the hassle of getting there and being dissapointed if it is a lemon / hence the £235 fee:(
My mate said make sure the internal filter has been changed, (have 2) and has the chassis is dry (sounds daft) have it wax oiled yearly.
