Evening all,

I've enjoyed reading your site and got a good insurance deal for my Landrover as a result already, so I thought I'd join you if I may.

I finally bought my first Landrover before Christmas, fulfilling a long-held dream. Now I'm fixing it up with my sons.

It's a 1985 110 V8 CSW with a gas conversion that doesn't work properly yet - no gas coming through, however much I play with the control valves and safety relays. I think I'll have to get a specialist to look at it soon, since I'm running out of ideas and my pockets are emptying fast paying for petrol. Any tips gratefully received.

The 110's been modified a lot by previous owners, so I have several mystery switches and extra metalwork under the bonnet. Should be fun finding out what it all does. Unfortunately the last guy didn't have a soldering iron, so there's lots of dodgy twisted wire and tape connections behind the clocks.

I also get a lot of water coming in around the doors. Any quick fixes you know of for this?

Glad to join you.

Hello Stumpy

Whereabouts does the water seem to be coming from? If it's from the tops of the doors then are they closing fully? You can adjust the lock 'keepers' on the pillars with a large philips screwdriver to ensure the doors fit tighter into the door seals - although you'll probably have to slam them harder.

However your water may be coming along the guttering above the doors on the inside. Does your 110 have the air vents above the rear door? If so water will trickle in here where it rains and then run all the way down the internal gutters until it tips out all over the drivers/passengers legs. Nice. I've bunged up the vents with mastic before but yesterday I saw a really neat solution whereby somebody had made some covers for them out of aluminium.

Water can also leak in anywhere along the roof join, anywhere around a sunroof (if you have one) or around where the front windscreen joins the bulkhead and the roof. It will also come in through your the airflaps in the front bulkhead if they're less than tight.

There are many other places it can leak in too but the above are the main culprits. Many happy hours with a mastic gun!

Cheers

If it is rain water landing on your knee when you open the door it is normal. It is just dodgy design and is one of those lovely Land Rover quirks.

Henry's right. Personally I think it's a feature they've deliberately never fixed in order to sell more Discoveries :p

Nope they kept the water leak feature in the Discovery as well:p

Thanks Leafspring, that's really helpful.

The main leaks are from the tops of the doors and I do have the air vents over the rear door just as you describe. I'll make some covers and adjust the doors.

I also have small leaks from the windscreen and sunroof, but they are not such a problem.

Thanks again.
