Dear all,

Over the past few weeks I've noticed the occasional (very light) grinding sound when down shifting into third gear. The vehicle is due a service soon and I had hoped to check it out then. This afternoon I went to reverse out of the yard (slight slope) when moments into the move I heard a prolonged grinding sound coming from what felt like the transmission - there is some vibration into the cab. The vehicle will move, but very slowly. I don't really want to force it any further. I then let the vehicle rest for a moment, restarted and attempted the move again, all went well briefly, grinding sound returned.

The current more or less consistent grinding sound has the same character as the down shifting case - is it safe to conclude they're related?

Advice greatly appreciated!

Thanks.

oil? or maybe your gearbox is mashed?
I do not know if this will fit, but if it is mashed it may be a good thing:

Thanks for getting back.

Though I'm far from expert I wonder if it could be the gearbox? I tried move the disco again yesterday evening and there wasn't a problem, no sound at all. Could it be a worn bearing?

Ta!

I would say your dual mass flywheel is on its way out do a google or search on here, they have an internal clutch and when that wear they can slip hence no drive, look on e-bay £180 ish.
Depending on mileage i would budget for a clutch as well.

Dear all,

Small update: I moved the disco this afternoon and all was well until after a few moments I selected reverse and the grinding sound returned. The noise becomes muted when I press in the clutch - the sound is more like a heavy whirring and you can feel the vibration in the cab. When I select a gear (any gear) and attempt to engage I get the sharp grinding sound.

Would this be the release bearing on the clutch?

I suppose I should also replace the spigot bearing while in there...and maybe the seals...and prepare for the possibility of a new clutch :(

Thanks in advance!

Thats how mine started a slight whir noise which i hoped was release bearing but only when cold after a few pushs noise went away until next time, gen spigot bearing about £1!
