Hello all,

I'm planning on a couple of trips across the highlands this summer in the landy, using it as s surf and mountaineering base before ending up in Iceland for more bumping about.

I'm looking for some additional essential equipment (read more toys) and thinking about getting a roof tent. Does anyone know of a store in reasonable driving distance of the central belt that sells this kind of kit? I'm very keen to have a good look at the roof tents close up before parting with any cash!

Thanks

Andy

Only place I can think of is Caranex, over in Oban. Not sure if they do roof tents though, but they certainly do awnings etc for Landies.

Andy Finlay at Echt in Aberdeenshire could probably get stuff, but he does not hold anything like that in stock.

Sorry if thats not been of help :(

Thanks, will give the Caranex guys a call. A wee trip to oban would be better than a mission to the deep south. Could always stop off in the hills on the way.

Like the truth in your signature. Ductape and a coat hanger should get you out of most situations. I read an article where they unstuck a landy with a tow rope made from ductape!

Dav, we might be on the same ferry if I get my finger out and get it booked! How long are you going out for and are you getting 4 day trip to the Faroes thrown in thanks to Smyrl line?

See you there.

Andy.

We arrive on the 24th and leave Iceland on the 7th for our enforced short break on the Faroes. Actually quite looking forward to seeing the Faroes.

I booked the ferry directly with Smyril Lines over the phone, very straightforward. Paid an initial deposit with the balance to be paid 1 1/2 months before departure.

Keep us updated - David.

i was in iceland last summer and slept in a mountain geodesic tent (marmot asguard 3 ). if using a roof tent please bear in mind that you won't find much shelter from the wind. if also heading into the interior remember you're also high up in altitude. i spent a night at Nydalur on the F26 Sprengisundur, it was sleeting, blowing a gale and 1 deg C (yes it was in the summer) the wind is channelled between 2 glaciers. you didn't stand around outside for long.

i must admit i've never used a roof tent, but if it is stormy, i'd prefer to be on the ground.
