wont go into gear

hello

looking at another freelander diesel today its a v reg diesel but it wont go into gear from start but if you start it in gear it will go into the gears then.

do you think it is a box problem or a clutch cylinder problem?

It should have the slave cylinder on the outside on a bracket on an L series, check that hasn't cracked or broken. Check the level and see how the slave moves.
