Tdi is streets ahead! Tdi has an intercooler and direct injection, I'll attach a piccy of a 200. Easiest way to tell in the valve cover, the 200's is machined with groves in it, the TD isn't. Also, the engine breather on a TD comes out the oil cap, where as a Tdi got a proper one on the valve casing.

tdi has more power and is more reliable providing you dont get a bad one.

The TD was basically a 2.5 NA with a turbo bolted on and a few tweaks to valve and injection timing. The 200 was the same type of engine but redesigned and was the first of the succesful direct injection diesel engines to be used in public road vehicles. It was the forerunner to almost all the direct injection diesels on the road today!

Pound for Pound People want alot of money for a Good 200, they even want alot if its a rot box!, the inlet and turbo housing on the moter are made from Unobtaininm and people have cottoned on to the fact that you can brake the car for more than its worth
TD is older and ALOT cheeper, but the engine is weeker and most are V tired, with failing pistions and other issues, Snagger had a couple of horror shots of a TD that was supposted to be good!
One option for you as you are handy in a garage would be to find a relau good NA/TD and make the mods to take a disco 200tdi dont know what this would do to the insurance but as its a LR moter i would have thought that its not going to be to Bad
hope this is of some help

No, it went down Chris as I had another years NCB! I use specialist insurers now though, namely Adrian Flux. Standard insurance companys get confused when I tell them its got a different Land Rover engine in.
'It's got a Tdi in now, from a later landy'
'Yes, a TD'
'No, a TDI, from a later landy'
'That Land Rover didn't come with that engine?'
'It did, but not in 1989, its still a defender engine'
'So its modified?'
'What do you reckon mate, its a different engine from a later vehicle'
'Computer says no, it doesn't come with that engine.........' muppets:rolleyes:
Rang up Adrian Flux and no problem, even commented that it was a good conversion to do!
Theres a defender 200Tdi with gearbox/ transbox for sale on ebay now, £650:rolleyes:

True, AF are brokers, think my actual insurance is with NIG. But can't fault them, cheapest quotes too for my age. Just had my renewal through too, £230ish for third party F&T with all the mods like modular wheels, spots, 200Tdi, snorkel ect ect, insurance to drive any vehicle I'm licenced for with owners permission and also recovery, Happy bunny:)
I'll still pretend I'm a new customer though and see if its cheaper:D

My mate has just bought himself a 200tdi engine from a defender which was being dismantled. He also got the gearbox, rad, air box, alternator etc, unfortunately the intercooler had already been sold.
The plan is to pull out the old 2.5TD (19J) and fit the 200tdi. I have checked all the threads on here and found a few articles about the swapover, which are extremely helpful. But it would be nice to see where all the ancillaries are mounted and all the pipes actually run in 200tdi engine bay.
As we dont know anyone with a 200tdi, does anyone have any photo's of a 200tdi in situ that shows everything in place etc.
Any images greatly appreciated.
Cheers

All the ancillaries stay where thay are chap, just engine out and other one back in! Didn't have to move anything from the TD when I did it, the Tdi will plumb up to everything TD tidy:) I'll attach some pics of mine. Ignore the red ring on one of the pics! Pic 5 shows where I had to cut a chunk out the slam panel mounts for the rad to fit in. Some you do, some you don't:rolleyes:

Thanks Ben. I knew the lump would just drop in and we could use the old ancillaries, it was just a case of the plumbing if the body mounted ancillaries were to stay exactly were they were.

Yup, everything can stay where is it:) Replace the power steering hoses that run under the radiator if they look damp like the oil is starting to seep through, apparently its a pain in the ar$e when the engines in, you have to remove the rad to replace them so may as well do them the same time when the rads out anyway:)
