Finally coming to the end of my timing belt job.

I need to tighten and threadlock the crank bolt. On the 200tdi this needs to be something like 330Nm!!!!!! How!?

Can I do it with the thing in 4th gear or do I really need to make a crank pulley holder out of some scrap steel?

I don't have a torque wrench that goes up to 330Nm, is there a way of torquing to 200Nm and turning an extra angle? If not where can you hire torque wrenches like that??

I know that someone not tightening the bolt sufficiently is what caused my problems in the first place so I want to do it right....but spending hundreds on a new wrench isn't really possible :(

Don't do it as says in the Haynes manual and put it in first gear low ratio! You do really need to make up a bracket to hold it firmly otherwise there is too much slack and spring in the transmission which causes the original problem. Make a good job of it for subsequent use. I can't personally see why you can't tighten as for the 300TDI in degrees but I'm prepared to be corrected. You'll need a four foot scaffold tube over a substantial 3/4 or 1" drive socket and breaker bar. If it needs to be torqued then a local tool hire shop should be able to help.

There is a wrench available from Difflock.com in their shop, it's about £55 from memory, not cheap but a; will make the job easier & b; you will become very popular !!

Incidently, I thought this bolt was supposed to be up to 80Nm then 90 degrees??

No the 80Nm + 90 degrees is the 300tdi unfortunately.....a much more sensible torque setting!!
