Hi all,

My Disco 2 V8 is misfiring slightly. Checked the plugs and it seems at least two of them aren't working and also one of the leads looks to be corroded/dead.

Went to the local autoparts shop, he did lots of tutting and sucking his teeth whilst shaking his head and told me i've got to have the Platinum tipped sparks for the V8. He wants over £80 for a full set of 8 plugs.

Then looked on eBay and find these much cheaper standard plugs (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Land-Range-Rover-4-2-4-3-V8-Discovery-4-0-Spark-plugs_W0QQitemZ190216804801QQihZ009QQcategoryZ3134 8QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)which it states are ok for my V8. And these are even cheaper (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/8-RN11YC-Spark-Plugs-Rolls-Royce-Bentley-Land-Rover-V8_W0QQitemZ260233917276QQihZ016QQcategoryZ108791Q QssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)!

So it leaves me asking the question are they any good, or do I have to pay a fortune for the platinum ones??

Also are these leads (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Discovery-4-0-4-6-99-02-V8-Set-of-8-Ignition-HT-Leads_W0QQitemZ270230257227QQihZ017QQcategoryZ3134 8QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)any good? And whilst we are talking about leads...... how in the hell do you replace them?? they are stuffed right down the back of the engine. Do I have to dimantle the engine to do it??

You DO NOT need fancy Platinum plugs - the best plugs for your car are the standard ones - Land Rover specify these as Champion RC11PYPB4, or equivalent. As for leads, I only ever use Magnecor.

You want the best quality ignition components you can get!!

As for changing the leads, it is hard - but you can reach behind the inlet manifold and swap them out. If your hands aren't small enough, then the coil packs are secured with a couple of screws each, and can be moved up out of the way to enable you to do the leads.

I've done mine many times now, and it takes me about half an hour to do the plugs and leads, without removing the coil packs.

Cheers

That sounds good then. I'll get the cheaper plugs.

I have looked at some Magnecor leads but they were over £70, is this a typical price for them?

Yes and i would also recomend the M leeds, have you looked how much work there is in changing them?

The upper inlet manafold needs to come of and even then its tight! It takes a good couple of hours, add 2 more if you have multi point lpg

as for the cost, dont look at the cheep ones esp as its so much work to change them! genuine parts where more expensive then the M leeds and not as good quality

Magnecor - I cant spell it!

you will need a workshop manual to do this, worth getting hold of as well If you dont mind about copywrite you can get them for £5 from ebay

if you need a hand let me know taken the top of my 4.0 to many times:(
