Are you any relation of the Jonathan Paton I knew at Wits, son of Alan Paton the author? No.

A little research suggests I'm a little too young to be him. Although
Alan's father was James Paton from Scotland. Somewhere deep in my
ancestry I could be related somehow. But that is a completely different
game of "who am I?".

Here are lots of clues:

Both of them have been making music since the late 1970's.

The male's most successful album reached number one in over forty
countries. The name of this album is the same as the year it was released.
If he had used his name to release the album he would be as well known
as Mike Oldfield and Vangelis.

The female is a singer who has released a dozen albums using her first
name. As more people are likely to know her name I've included two
additional photographs of her.

Both have worked on each other's music.

[I guess I just made it too hard. Maybe we should concentrate on British
TV, pop stars or another subset of the famous].

either of them. But I'm sure someone on the forum will so I don't want to

The clue "Nobody knows who I am" is a line from Sandra's "Secret Land".
Other singles include "Maria Magdalena" (1985), "In the heat of the night",
(1985), "Heaven can wait" (1988) and "Around my heart" (2007).

Michael Cretu produced three albums under his own name before Enigma.
But it was MCMXC a.D. (1990) that reached number one in 41 countries,
stayed in the UK charts (top 75) for over three years and gave him plenty

I think he went onto play a part in Star Wars...Darth Vader????

If it is then I think his name is David Prowse.

Other way round - Vader first, then the Green Cross Code Man. The ad makers wanted Vader's kiddie-cred to make the message "cool" enough to be taken seriously.

Star Wars killed a fair few actors' film careers, with only Ford doing really well afterwards (ironic, considering how he was one of the weakest and laziest actors in the films:rolleyes:). Prowse was also very upset about being dubbed, but can anyone really imagine Vader having a west-country accent instead of James Earl Jones' deep tone?:D

So who was this - an inventor of a technology used by all manufacturers nowadays

Charles Babbage ???

JimAttrill
23rd Nov 2008, 07:21
I see you are reacting to the clue. No it is not Charles Babbage, though of the same era.

I believe he was the person that 'invented' the idea of having parts made to a standard spec rather than the previous way when all parts were 'made to measure'. So his idea allowed the technique of mass production, first practiced by Henry Ford.

He was an American. With a hat like that, I guess he has to be :D

Another clue - the company he started still bears his name.

Snagger

What about George Westinghouse?

JimAttrill
23rd Nov 2008, 11:45
Sorry, I am wrong about the guy in the picture being the originator of 'interchangeable parts'. The American most famous for that is Eli Whitney, the inventor of the cotton gin (whatever that is). Though there is a connection between the two men. Here is Eli:

JimAttrill

TEMPL4R

Winchester, I did think Samuel Colt at first, but went down the line of gunsmiths, Browning, Colt, Winchester...

JimAttrill
23rd Nov 2008, 13:46
You win! Eli Whitney's grandson sold what was to become the Winchester company from Smith & Wesson to Winchester, who made a success of it. All these gunsmiths seem to have come from the same town.

So your go, sir :)
