Ok Ideas anyone.
Whys the paint peeling off the roof of my ex-mod series3. The paint has started coming of in a patch all along the drivers side revealing a nasty green colour. Is this the primer? I belive the hard top was fitted during its service but only seems to have one layer over the green on the roof and upper side panels, the rest of the truck has the usual several coats but not as many as others i have seen.
The reason i am asking is i am planning on repainting soon and i dont want all my hard work flaking off in the next heavy rain storm.
I will post a pic when i find my digi camera.

Difficult to say without an inspection, but I would suspect that the top-coat was put on to a paint surface that had a bit of age to it, and also without proper preparation such as rubbing down and [re]priming.

I would further suggest, that the problem will be on-going, unless this top-coat is sanded off prior to the repaint.

Cheers Ash. Will try and get a picture tomorow.
Thanks Alan, the ultimate camo, go off road and get muddy, sprinkle with grass seed, water occasionaly. Bingo, one camo landy.
Might be a bit of a ****** to mow.

Gotta go with my original diagnosis, improper bonding due to lack of surface preparation before painting.

Looks like the same problem is on its way on a few other areas in the photo.

A good rub-down and proper priming/u-coating is in order.

Cheers Ash. When you say priming do you mean etch priming it all first? If so do i need to take it back to the metal?
If not the above what sort of primer should i use over the manky green after giving the surface do good key first?

Gidday Jon,
Yes, use Etch primer, especially if you have gone thru to the metal.

Once you are sure that all the cr*p paint has been removed and the good paint has been "keyed", there is no need to go any deeper.

One problem you MAY be faced with, is compatibility, ie, the new primer may rip into the type of paint the military use. [Usually applied with a yard-broom] Sometimes it can produce results like the terrain on the far side of the moon! Test a small area before firing up the spray-gun!

I dont class myself as a paint expert, I'm just a basement painter. I recommend you consult a paint shop and be advised by them in the 1st instance as to what paint to use, as there are a number of different types of paint, all requiring different thinners/techniques etc. [This is where the above mentioned problem can arise - and has with me in the past]

Ash:)

I am going to try and get some of the nato green colour for the body so that should go over the old stuff ok i think. For the roof i was thinking of trying some blackboard type paint for a nice matt black. I was hoping to get some off the old paint off this week and try some test patches but the weather isnt looking too good and i have no weather proof shelter to stick the big beast under.
On the plus side all the heavy rain is taking off more of the old black:D
Thanks again ash.
