Can anyone advise me how to get the oil seal out of the rear of the transfer box?
I have got as far as removing the output flange and can see the seal but cannot get to it. There is a metal ring with an inward facing lip that is before it and prevents removal. I'm not sure how to get it off. I have removed the oil catcher and can see a notch where a screwdriver could possibly prise it off but i'm too scared in case i break it.
Any ideas??

I take it you've got the new seal there, ready to go in? Is it an original Land Rover one or a cheapy copy?
It sounds to me as if the metal plate you're looking at is the metal casing for the seal. If you have a gen seal then compare and contrast the two together.
Does anyone else know if the output seal is metal encased?

There is a circlip and the dirt ring and the seal.
I can't remember if the dirt ring fits around the outside of the rear housing or in where the seal fits. It should just tap off. I think the circlip is behind it, holding the seal in. Not 100% sure though.

Thanks for the input!
Have got a little frustrated lately with my local dealer so I bought the seal from paddocks.
I can see where it needs to be, but the size is just a little larger than the metal collar it would need to squeeze through. I presume the collar needs to removed before i can try to release the old seal.
I found an old thread with instructions on removing the seal from a series 2 but no mention on there of a collar

If it's this metal bit, it taps out, it's a dirt shield.
