Budget 2008 - motoring taxes

Published: Wednesday, 12 March 2008http://www.direct.gov.uk/prod_consum_dg/groups/dg_digitalassets/@dg/@en/documents/digitalasset/dg_4000172.jpg
The Budget has set out new policies intended to reduce emissions across all major sectors of the economy, and ensure the UK leads the climate change agenda internationally.

Car tax rates and bandings

The structure of vehicle tax (vehicle excise duty) will be reformed from 2009, to reward drivers of more fuel efficient cars and encourage them to consider the environmental performance when buying a new car.

More tax bands

New, smaller bands will be introduced from 1 April 2009 (for cars registered after 1 March 2001), so that a small change in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions has a bigger effect on the cost of vehicle tax. These changes include:

reduced rates for cars that emit up to 150g of CO2 per km
increased rates for the most polluting cars
a new top band for cars that emit more than 255g of CO2 per kmAlternative fuel cars will receive a discount of £20 (bands A to I) or £15 (bands J to M) in 2009-10, and £10 (all bands) in 2010-11.

First year rates

There will also be a new rate for the first year of owning a new car from 1 April 2010, with higher rates for the most polluting cars.
For the least polluting new cars, which emit 130g of CO2 per km or less, the first year rate will be zero. For new cars that emit between 131 and 160g of CO2 per km, the first year rate will be the same as the standard rate.

dont think its just the 4x4 users, read somewhere that the vaux zafira sri or vxr falls into the same catagory, and the ford mondeo 2ltr/2.5 ltr,so its just as bad owning a car.

just been on sky news , and they were using people carriers as examples , not 4x4's which makes a change. the top and bottom of it is this goverment will tax every one off the road ..

yep, read it in paper today that people carriers and they named the renault espace, ford galaxy, citroen C8, volkswagon sharran, these all fall into the high tax band so unless you drive one of those eco friendly things or something the size of a pram, you will get hammered in tax, they also said that diesel will £1.50 a ltr by 2009, so you will get hammered again.

what we need is a goverment that ant out to shaft the woking class like Mr brown.road tax like this is not for the enviroment its for the goverments retirement funds...:p:p:p

Great, the goverment want people to car share, so when you get a car that can carry more people, i.e people carrier & Disco 7 seaters they are going to charge you more for it.

Someone in the goverment needs to sit back & think a little.

I think last nights result should be a wake up call to the current goverment.

its not that, get them to justify it as you could take a td5 on a 99 plate whitch is all the same mechanicaly as a td5 2004 then work out the most polutive of the 2 the 99 with 120000 miles or the 2004 20000 miles just dosent make sence so in all fairnes we sould all buy older cars and polute the earth more for less, by the way im not having a dig at older cars but carnt understand the ethics. The mods on here should get a ballet together for the 4x4 community and get it sent of to MPs and see the reply (again is this worth it)....get labour out .what this country needs is for all to stop working traveling for 5 day and bring the goverment to randsom to sort this mess out, or are we just going to lie down and take it on the chin like all ways........

Hi Mattay,

Yes your are right, Thats why the Goverment needs to sit back & think a little, seems someones come up with a bright idea without sitting back & really thinking it through, If this was France they would be out in the street rioting. I had a Volvo V70 that did without fail 43mpg regardless of what speed (i.e not driven slowley)

That was a 2.4 D5 engine, I paid 21% company car tax on this car as it was a 2003 model, came to replace it and the Goverment had placed in 23% tax band, so I thought that was too much and found an alturnative, Passat 2.0 170hp Diesel in 21% tax band, but the Passat will not do more than 38mpg, so I have a smaller engine that does less miles to the gallon, so overall it must levels its self out. ( Overall on Emmisions )

This year I looked at my tax return only to see some changes, after questioning my accountant, he tells me that they have increased the tax band on the Passat to 22%, Why I am sure the emmisions have not changed since I bought it. This Goverment have not got a clue.

hi haydn

You are right this country is in a sham of a mess thanks to a goverment who with no disrispect to anyone will let poeple enter the country and then give them money form our taxes we have paid to live on and the tell us the the country is broke so we need to screw the working class man even more to correct there mistakes if this was australia you would be veted before entering.. i think the raod tax issue is a stinker and it about time the british poeple stuck up to the dip stick in charge and got him out !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BRING OUR TAXES DOWN :p

The environmental arguement, ie Global Warming etc is also still only a theory. It may still be down to natural variation, so for me that's what makes this whole car tax thing hard to swallow. Sure, some increase would be ok, but doubling it? This will hopefully be another clanger like the 10p income tax band.

The Govt have sneaked this increase in. Once people get their bills for 450 quid for normal cars there will be loads more stink kicked up.

A guy in my work mentioned about the increase tax on 4x4's. He was gob smacked when I showed him the parkers guide and he realised his normal car was also going to be hit badly by this.

Cheers

Andy
