not a huge expedition , but a 4 week long drive to corfu and back.
going to be taking in some greenlaning , wild camping , mountain tracks, guitars and camp fires, a train through a mountain and a 24 hour ferry journey from venice to corfu along the way.
when there it will be lots and lots of greenlanes , more mountain tracks more wild camping , lots and lots of swimming in hard to reach beaches and a lot of ouzo.:)
no roof tents , no duel fuel tank set ups , not much in the way of branded suspension set ups , no on board water tanks , keeping it simple , cheap and cheerfull.
this week is route preperation and a few odd jobs on the 90 to get it prepped.
this is the vehicle we are taking

there will also be a 300tdi disco coming with us.
Sounds good. Who needs ten grand worth of kit. Your landy and a woman is good enough........plus your toolkit:D..............spanners I mean:o

That looks suspiciously like the one you (re)made yourself. Corfu is
much, much, much further than I would have driven your Land Rover
in the state you bought it. Enjoy your trip.

cheers guys ,this will be the 3rd time we have made this trip , first time was in the micra then in the 90 last year but this time we shall be taking our time and enjoying the journey rather than pointing it south and flooring it.
learned a few hard lessons last time , like two people cant sleep in a 90.

Have a good one Rob, reading this is reminding me of my trip to Crete in 2005, had a great time driving through Europe. As it happens we stopped in Corfu for a couple of nights, spent a really relaxed night wild camping on one of the beaches, took the Landy down there and set up camp. If I remember which beach it was I'll post it on here if you're interested - although it was a few years back :D
Can't wait to get on the road again - must stop spending money

Any room for a little one??? If you put one of those roof box things on the rack I'll sleep in that.

no worries redhand , cost ya five donkeys and a potato.
pretty much got our route planned. the basics are , first night in the black forest after a long drive from calais, then over to geneva going anti clockwise around the lake and spending the second night around there. the next day we will set off east driving through the alps where we shall probably take our time and spend another night, we shall then decend to venice via the dolomites.
after a day and night in venice we will get a ferry from there to corfu.
our other option is to go to piza from geneva then cut across to venice but this would only be to see the leaning tower which , in my opinion , isnt really worth the effort so i doubt this route will be the one we end up taking.
either way we have all the time in the world (4 weeks) so playing it by ear will be the order of the day i reckon , although ms nobber seems obsessed with pre booking ferries.
the 90 is almost ready , new injectors today, sorted some serious rad cooling fans out (two in the front pushing and one behind pulling via a cowl), two new gkn props from autopost (cheapest gkn supplier i could find and extremley helpfull in getting me the right bits) , new oil cooler stat.
got to wire the cooler box in this week end (for the beer and bacon) and get the power sockets in for charging the lap top, phones and stuff.
leaving monday 31'st so its a matter of weeks now.
need to see if i can still fit into my speedo's.

, although ms nobber seems obsessed with pre booking ferries.Where's the fun in that? :D
It's off topic but don't suppose you've got any pics of the fan mods you've done on the 90? Thinking of doing something similar to the Disco but haven't had time/inclination yet. We're bound to be off south at some point and it'd be nice not to make such a wooooooshing sound when we do!
Have a great time by the way. I'm not jealous me, no not one bit!

cheers george , the fans are two from a rangie , they are the assisting fans for the air conditioning and one from a volkswagon , the rangie ones are up front and the vw one is an old three pronged jobby bolted onto the rad cowling.
they all work together via a switch and relay.
i can get you some pics later this week if i get a chance.
its a pretty good set up , even my oil temp drops when i switch them on, sounds like an aeroplane though.

where is the first pic from? cos it reminds me of the alps which are breathtaking.... and i only learnt the true meaning of the word "breathtaking" when i drove through the alps.
Have fun on your trip dude, its what life is all about :)
Hi Nobber,
Sounds like a great trip planned. Where does the train journey take place?
Don't be in a rush to get out of the Dolomites, they are a great place to spend a few days. Cortina is a lovely town with several campsites within walking distance of the town and with some good Via Ferrata routes close by and you are only 1/2 a days drive down to Venice.

I still want to take the Disco to Africa one year (but who knows when that might be ) so I figure extra cooling is no bad thing. Have heard that 2.5 Mondeo fans are also good.

jees alane , thats one ugly bloke.
thew train was from gopplestien or burgenmeisterstien or somewhere , its close to the simplon pass. george sorry fella , il get those pics tomorrow if i remember. just had a bit of a nightmare week , my turbo bit the dust and my engine doesnt look too healthy. my turbo started leaking exhaust gas from where the centre housing meets the turbine and the two parts would move around indipendently of each other , then my engine lost power and spurted oil out from the sump gasket , rocker casket and turbo oil return union.
ive got a new turbo but im not sure if the turbo caused the oil to leak or if it was something else that caused both the turbo and oil leaks.
its looking like it could be a false start if i dont get this sorted.
the new turbo is the latter kind so im not even sure if it will work on this engine.
Sorry to hear that Nobber, it never rains, it pours :(

yup , thats what the weather forcast has said for the week end.
cant be under the bonnet of a landy unless its a pressure job in the rain...:)

Yikes that sucks, hope the new turbo is ok. Have to admit I've wondered more than once how much life mine's got left in her, still seems to blow ok but you never know eh. Hope you get it sorted quick so you can concentrate on the trip...

Turbos on any engine can be a risk, especially if your burning an odd spec fuel.. In europe diesel specs are very high, low sulphur, etc.. Burn heavier oils and soot deposits in the turbo could play havoc and cause other problems.. A non turbo engine with a proper timing chain would be a wiser choice. Scare mongering maybe, but it is yet another potentical as you've found

Perhaps we should all just walk everywhere. no chance of anything breaking then! :)
Oh hang on a minute I've spotted a flaw in my thinking. We could break something. Oh well best we all just stay at home then.:( Nobber you'd better cancel the trip.

here are the pics of the fans, big one on the rad cowl came from a VW and has three legs that ive bolted down to the cowl , its very powerfull and although it doesnt need them ive put two assistor fans in front of the rad from a rangie.
they run off a relay and switch on the dash.
still wrestling with a broke turbo and we are set to leave monday.

new turbo's on and working.:D
its spooling up a tad late but its working.
the steering is a bit twitchy but hopefully will be ok if i dont get a chance to look at it.
tried to buy some new oil on line last week but it didnt arrive in time so ive had to go out this morning and buy it all over again. 8ltrs magnatec, 10ltrs of ep90 and 5 ltrs atf. should be enough to do it all.
got most of the electrical work done , new plug sockets etc so its now just some last minute shopping and then time to overload the roof rack.

well that took alot longer than expected, we are about 30 mins outside venice. wwent down to geneva then turned loeft through the alps.
went right across heading east then turned south towords venice.
got to see loads of mountain passes , snow and a couple of glaciers.
even wwent inside one. first night was spent camping in the black forest then the rest on the alps..
weather has been a bit rough , rain and thunder storms for a lot of it , cool though.:)
the landy has been a bit tempromental, exhaust fell off in germany and its been running really lumpy but i think its a gasket on the inlet manifold thats letting past. the turbo is boosting quite late so climbing mountains was interesting. alsdo wasted the front diff oil seal in germany , ive got a spare but ive just been topping up as we go along with ep90. ep90 by the way is universal through out most of europe thank god , i was dubious as to what they call it in different countries.
anyways , a day in venice tomorrow then a ferry to corfu for some nice beaches , ouzo and mozzy bites.
cant find the delete button =..<im
the wave:D , that universal land rover wave thingy is alive and well in most countries we went tyhrough, as is the baffled look of "who are they waving at":)
i will trty and load up pics when we get to greece, my lap top internet connection wont work here so i cant do it yet.
so , chow for now.;

here for three weeks rob give or take then its a nice relaxed drive home.
i will try to get some pics uploaded soon but i cant get my lap top to connect.
we have been trying to get in touch with the corfu off road club but have had no reply yet, they look really well established from what we saw and do lots of trips away.
watched the 300 last night and decided that a trip to sparta might be in order via athens and the accropolis.:D
ive got some oil dripping from the dtrain plug on the bottom of the timing cover , its not looking too bad but its still worrieng , im running magnatec wd10/40 so im guessing its due to the slipperyness of the oil , i hope.
or the crappyness of the td.
anyways , this internet cafe serlls draught beer in frozen glasses so i cant stay for too long.

maybe you should consider coming on our next trip tops? thinking about eastern europe , russia , mongolia , the road of bones and around that way.
and ive only been back a week.....
anyways , back in blighty again :(.
the trip home was just as cool as the trip there, went up through the alps then across the passes ending up in montreux , wild camping on the alps then a camp site by the lake close to montreux. had a day in the castle there before heading up to the black forest again to camp there for the night.
met a scotish couple in a 90 pulling a sankey with a roof tent on it , they had a big canadian canoe on the roof of the 90. met them on a tight mountain pass and we were going in opposite directions so it was a very brief meeting. so , if its anyone from here , it was lovely to meet you guys.:)
saw very few expedition vehicles on our way , one 110 but mostly expencive looking toyotas with lots of pro kit attached to them.
my laptops hard drive decided not to work on the way home and after a self check in bias mode (dont ask , just pressed f11 and ran a self check on the hard drive drive) , it took less than 2 minutes to conclude tests 1-5 were a fail so its looking like a mechanical fault rather than a software fault. the bad news , all my photos were on it , the good news is i backed them all up just before i left corfu.:)
so ,l when i get the disk posted over and my hard drive replaced (its still under warrenty) i will post up some pics.
not happy to be back in blighty though , my garden was a jungle , my first expresso was a half a cup of black coffee , its done nothing but rain and currys after sales help telephone team turned out to be the biggest bunch of...........,

got my back up disc sent over from greece so ive got most of my pics back.
if anyone has 3-5 weeks to spare id recommend this trip , nice contrast between snow and cold in the alps to hot (sometimes40+) beaches in greece.
lots of legal green lanes in corfu , just dont drive over any olive plantations , keep to the tracks.
the lanes arnt really difficult or vehicle damaging but they do bring you to some suprisingly beautifull mountain views or secluded beaches.
some of the mountain lanes can be scary due to the sheer drop on one side , usually into a rocky ocean below so you do need to watch out on these.
if you were to go over , and you were on your own , you might never be found.
the price of diesel has doubled in the past year so expect to pay £1 gbp per litre or there abouts but the cost of living isnt too bad.
there are camp sites on the island , not sure about prices but they look quite large and pretty well organised.
wild camping is not allowed on the island but once you are out of they way you should be ok , just dont light fires in stupid places or leave them unattended.
lots of attractions on the island from boat rides , massive caves ,aqualand , water sports etc etc and some really great beaches.
and its done nothing but rain sinse ive been back.
