I've just got a socket and plug of Jon Kelly at Venture Overland.
No idea what the rating is. This one locks into place.
I burnt a plug and socket out on my last trip. The plug got moved without us noticing it. You should have seen the state of both of them.

i can imagine , id hate to have to watch my landy burn out due to a cheap ciggie lighter socket.
What are you thinking of connecting? ive got my inverter actually connected to my battery using big ring connections, through a fuse.

anything from work lamps to fridges , id just rather have something with a high rating and not need it than need it and not have it.

The trouble is that the fag lighter socket is rated at high amps, but short duty cycle.
Try these things

Nobber get Din Connectors they look like cig lighter sockets but are designed for plugging accessories in and are much better than cig lighter sockets http://www.motorcaravanning.co.uk/shopuk/procar_adaptors.htm

The answer to this type of question is usually no. But in this
case consider DIN ISO 4165 sockets:
http://www.hella.co.nz/?t=9&pcid=265
Some of them are rated at 32A instead of 16A.

What about Anderson (http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.eu/VWP-onlinestore/battconns/battconn.php#powerconn) connectors?
The small ones handle 50 amps and are used for fridges and the likes. The medium ones handle around 175 amps and are used for winches and portable batteries.

If I'd seen known about this, I'd have shown you where the plugs were in Outdoor Warehouse and we could have sorted it while your truck was here :D

Got these on my truck, run anything from plug in spot lamp, run fridge, even have a soldering iron that plugs into them... never had a problem with them, just make sure your wiring supplying them is up to the game...
There is several of the permantly insatlled at various external points around my truck.. handy..

I think I'd sorted that before we came to you.....

For the fridge I use Anderson connectors. Yes I know that Engel supply the lead with a fag plug on but that plug doesn't fit a normal type fag lighter socket. You need to go to MPS for the socket.
For lamps you shouldn't need a high current socket. Unlesyou're using a flo light in which case don't believe what you read about them. They take a lot of current. Go LED.
Think the same for rear flood lights. You will get less than half an hour with one flood light and the fridge running from the battery. Again go LED.
Engel produce a nice piece of equipment that goes between the battery and the fridge. It switches the fridge, or any equipment, off when the battery drops to 11.5 volt.

yup , i think low current appliences rather than high current sockets would be best. the only concern i have with ciggie sockets is running lots of stuff at once from one , lap top , gps , camera , fridge (well its more of a cooler box and it only draws 4 amps) and an interior flood light on a flexy/springy cable .but they all add up.
perhaps if i get the proper ciggie lighter sockets rather than the 3 from one type things and use some nice juicey cable to wire them up from a junction box.

Have a look in Work In Progress at how I wired the ciggie lighters up in Olivia. That truck has all three socket types. Ciggie sockets DIN (aka Hella) plugs and Anderson connectors. It also has multiple ciggie lighter sockets on the dashboard.

ooh , will do. i dont think im gonna need loads , 3 in the front and two in the back should be more than enough.

I had two sockets in the front of my cubby box. One ran the GPS. The other the phone chargers. Both going to a four gang socket box.
Later this year the GPS will be hard wired. As will the new computer to run the second GPS system.
All interior lights on mine are LED. I can leave the doors open all the time on camp sites and not have a problem.
The fridge is wired straight from the battery, with an Anderson plug connection.
I think I've already pointed you to this thread. If not have a read. You should see the sockets and things in the pictures

I've just got a new plug and socket. this plug locks into the socket.
Have a word with Jon at Venture Overland if you'd like more information.
