Ferry or container ?
Which shipping company or agent would be a help.

Mike
not too sure if you can actually ship from Port Sudan. I think it is a small harbour south of P sudan where you will be able to ship to or from. Also keen to hear what the ouotcome is because we tried to do it but were unable to. will most likely just pay Carne for Egypt.

Well I'm not paying the price of a Carnet for Egypt.
At the present value of my Defender, £3,000 at the most, that means a bond of 24,000.
Even though my house is paid for. Value about £100,000 and the bank holding the deeds, I can't see the bank putting that sort money up.
I'm seeing the bank manager on Thursday.

you have to pay 24k bond to get a vehicle into egypt?

That depends on the value of your vehicle.
Most countries ask for 150% of the value of the vehicle. I use bottom book price. Accessories except radio aren't counted.
Keyna ask for 200% as does another country.
Egypt ask for 800% it'ds gone up recently.
The bond is so that you don't sell the vehicle while you are away.
The bond is calculated on the highest value that a country puts on it and that is the bond for the whole trip.
A Carnet is issued for one year. Up until recently you could get an extension. That seems to have been stopped recently.

Mike, I use a Carnet de Passage for a lot of my African destinations. I buy the Carnet at the AA in Johannesburg. A 5 page Carnet costs me about R1500 plus a R500 refundable deposit.
These Carnets are valid in Kenya and Tanzania, and almost all other countries EXCEPT Egypt.
An SA couple who recently drove their Rolls Royce through Africa had to register the Rolls as an Egyptian vehicle, and then de-register the vehicle before leaving. This took a few weeks of cajolling aparently.
I don't know how Kingsley's bunch did Egypt, but I'll find out for you in due course.
Nobber, the way it works in Tanzania is that you can use the Carnet to enter and exit, but if you don't have a Carnet you have to lodge the value of the vehicle (in US Dollars) with the Tanzanian authorities. You can claim the money back when you leave the country... in Tanzanian Shillings

Yes Marc. Egypt is different. 800% of the vehicle value.
You can only buy a Carnet in the country for which the vehicle is registered ???

Marc,
Talking of Kingsley...Where is his group at the moment? What plans are there for when he reaches the Mozambique / SA border? Are there any plans for a convoy from Gordon's Bay, Strand, Muisenberg or Simonstown to the end of the line?

Remember we had a Carnet for our visit........The RAC issued ours. I think Margaret paid about 200quid for that and the IDP's. International Drivein Permit.

Well, that's more-or-less what it costs here too. Doesn't cover Egypt though :(

Better go
Turkey (Istanbul - Ankara - Iskenderun)
Syria
Jordan
Saudi
Ferry from Port Jeddah to
Sawakin Sudan (100km south of Port Sudan)
I also will NOT pay the crazy 800% asked by Egypt.
Then don't forget the laughable Blue Nile ferry from Aswan to Wadi H.
Another serious "rip-off"
