Hello and welcome...

There is plenty of information to be had from member on this site regarding this subject, many have and still do landy based expeditions,

may help if you let us know what your planning on doing in the landy, ie week trip here and there, month, year trip etc...

Depends on the plans you have n waht mods you may require...

Cheers

Hello and welcome to the forums!

Is this a 130 chassis / cab (ie single cab) or a 130 double cab?

What's behind the passenger compartment at the minute?

4x4 camper van might be a better option.
certianly cheaper , more comfortable and more reliable.
im slowley coming to the conclusion that landys are not designed for overland trips, they are more suited to pulling horse boxes up and down farm tracks.

I think you may find that they were never designed for over landing in the first place, but they just so happened to be good at it as a by-product of their original design parameters.

Would argue against that, how are you comparing the vehicles? What is a 4x4 camper van? Are you comparing a state of the art £60,000 plus vehicle with your 90? You need to compare like for like, which also means size of vehicle and how the vehicle is equiped. The carawagons/dormonlies are very good campers, but these tend to be based on 110's, and can be used for everyday use as well. Seen some really good set up 101's and 130's with camper boxes added to the back of them, giving you everything you need.
Give us an example of the 4x4 camper van your we will try and find the same type in Landie form for you to compare.

:LAA: Now that made me laugh... think you used the wrong words there...

if there was something on the market that would take the punishment a landie can take and was almost the same in price i would look at it. only look. i have added so much to my landie there is truly almost no empty spaces anywhere. and the amount of accessories that fit onto a landy are fantastic. i dont know of any other vehicle that has as many standard fittings.
for me on my budget a landy is king

So you're suggesting that a farming vehicle was designed as an expedition vehicle first?

But Rich, that isn't what you said, the way you wrote it was that Land Rovers were not designed for off road work... As I said, made me laugh as I knew what you were meaning but you used the wrong words to get your message across.

4wd transit?

They don't have the life span of a Landie, nor are they as capable off road. How many 30 year old 4x4 transits set up for an off road expendtion can you find on e-bay...

The German equal to the Landie, a 101 would do the same job, plus also a lot of the pictures of the unimogs also show the standard camper van back that has also been fitted to 110/130 landies as well.

What I would say is, a 90 is not an ideal expedition vehicle, from the point of view of the size of it. You have to make compromisies all the type due to it's size, or use a trailer.
The 110 I know a few people to have used, and used with a lot of success, espcially with a dormobile conversion, the 130 does add that extra space needed, and if you use one of the camper van units on the back it brings all the much needed space for camper living.

http://www.dormobile.co.uk/ Site is missing all the info at the moment it seems.

http://www.adrianstomcat.co.uk/LandRover127.htm Example of a 130 ambulance converted, gives all the space needed with Land Rover off road ability.

I think that history shows that the most travelled and versatile 4x4 has been the mule. :)

Does good mileage too on the fuel provided... snag is, they are even worse than Land Rovers for stopping for no apparent reason and refusing to go until given a good talking too.. :D:D:D

Well now that we have discussed the merits of a couple of other vehicles, perhaps we could go back to the question.

Am I reading your post correctly ?
You want to build a nice new body on a 130 chassis ?

As has been said look at the Foley site. Take all the nice ideas, I've seen one of their vehicles.

Also have a look at www.alu-cab.co.za (http://www.alu-cab.co.za). They recently built a very nice camper body on a VW. Still if it's only the body you're interesd in.

I might have a couple of other places for insparation if you ask.

Just looking at the pictures is worthwhile!

We have a 25 year old 110 converted to a camper van. Love it to bits. She has done pay and play, Sarn Helen, Hannibals Trail just to name a few and has been from Orkney to the Med.

Only the roof was commercialy made. All the interior fittings we made/fitted ourselves into a standard 110 body.

Have a look at this 110 (http://www.eastcoastrover.com/67.html). Quite a transformation.
