hi,
I bought a discovery 2 '04, and found that the right side of the console is extremely warm.
The garage says its "normal", which I don't believe and I'm going to proof that it is not correct.
I put a thermometer against the plastic, (one with an external sensor) yesterday it became 54,1 degree Celsius..... Really hot.
No a/c on, just the fan on 3/4 and on low....

would you mind sharing if you have the same problem.

thanks,
Ed

Enjoy your battle with the dealer.
It's is completely normal.
The ducts for the rear footwell vents run through the centre console.

I had the same concern when I got my first Disco ('51 ES Td5) last year and it is "normal" for the plastic to get that hot!

If you turn off all the aircon/heating/ventilation systems completely you'll find that it doesn't get hot at all?

Cheers for now

Hello, thanks for the replies... the last one, from shermydog, convinced me that it is "normal".
It pieked over the week to 57 degrees, and when everything was turned off, just the normla temperature....
I need to conclude that this is a design fault... it should never be that hot...
I might take the whole console of and put insulation material in between...
cheers,

Hello,

Back again. The comment from shermydog started me thinking... so I solved the problem...!!!
I removed the whole middle console, and found that the hot water coming from the cooling of the engine is running trough a device in the console.
On the left hand side it wasn't getting that hot, there was a cover over the pipes. On the right hand side there was not, it was bare metal. Like as if it was forgotten to put it on in the factory.
And that was the problem. The heat generated by the pipe caused the issue.
I used packing foam (sturdy enough to resist the heat.) to cut a customized cover for the bare metal and to cover the space between pipes and the cover of the middle console. Also made the same cover on the left hand side, preventing the hot air to come into the console.
After that, in the middle I also put a cover in. Put the console on, and issue fixed.
Temperature now not higher then 27 degrees Celsius.
I don't know how to put any pics on this site, but I made some before and after. Just let me know if you want them and I can send them on, or let me know if I can upload them on the forum.

Thanks all, for the input....

cheers,
Ed

glad you found the problem, had it on my auto disco. There's a company that advertise heat resistant, saw it in the back of LRO mag, good stuff, made sooooo much difference!!:D

Glad that you managed to fix it.....would like to look at your pics but have never uploaded any myself to be honest, so I'm not sure how you do it!

It looks like you can use the "Manage Attachments" button at the bottom of the screen used to create replies?
