Had it chopped off today and a bit of straight pipe welded in all for NZ$ 90. Bloody fantastic, should have done it months ago. The engine seems to rev better, I can hear the turbo spooling up quickly. Just got to keep the right foot off the firewall carpet now so I can hopefully appreciate some economy gain instead of using the extra speed.
Over here it is cheaper to get the old filter cut out and a section of straight pipe welded in.
So thats the EGR vacuum control pipe plugged with a ball bearing, something done to the injector pump to make cold starting fantastic and particulate filter removed. Just got to get cruise control ecu, intermittent rear windows control fixed and a bloody leak in foot well sorted then it will be a trouble free Disco:D
By the way it is on a 1997 300TDi auto.

Hiya Buddy, I changed the downpipe for a non-cat one on my '98 Tdi300 auto recently and found the same as you that performance increased significantly.

I can now report back on fuel consumption.

Have done a few longer runs in the last couple of weeks:

1. First run to Normandy, about 600mile round trip. Mixture of slow small country lanes, town work and longer distance on "A" roads at 60mph and autoroute at 65-70mph and achieved 37.2mpg !!!

2. Second trip to the south of France, about 550 miles. Mixture of "A" road at 60mph and autoroute at 65 - 80mph and achieved 34mpg !!

I'm well pleased with that..:D:D

They are a restriction in the system no doubt about that, they do give a clean exhaust if they get hot enough to fire up, but most journeys are too short. Mercs suffer from them blocking and a lot are changed under warranty ( according to our friendly Merc Technician who does our Merc jobs :) )

I certainly wouldn't fit another if it needed changing, but if it worked OK I'd leave it.

Well Big Lad if I can look forward to fuel economy like that I will be happy. Our speed limit is strictly policed to 100kmh so hopefully I can improve on yours.
